Hello,
I'm in the Bay Area of San Francisco, started riding about 1.5 yrs ago, with a DR200, then sold and upgraded to a Wee Strom and have now added a used 2008 WR250R with lots of miles at 23,500. I rode it home from San Francisco and our next ride was down to Metcalf for a morning of dirt newbie stuff.
A few falls and scratches later, I'm happy :-)
I'll be looking to improve my dirt riding skills, building up the bike to my height (6'6") and weight (215 lbs) for possible camping trips.
I'm not sure I'll have much to share but my own minuscule experience but look forward to hear what the long time owners have to say.
She probably has had a few things do to it. I'll share a few pictures to ask for advice.
Happy riding ...

Here's my first question ... what's this?

New owner of a used 2008 WR250R CA 14246610

Right in the center of the image it appears as though something was removed. Any idea what happened?

And here's my second question ...

What's this?

New owner of a used 2008 WR250R CA 20150210

Note the two arrows. I think that's the CA canister that's been removed. In fact that black plastic skid plate has room for some sort of a tube in the front but it's empty.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Thank you ... that's what I'm trying to find out. I'm the third owner. The second owner put maybe 500 miles on the bike and did not know much (new rider as well). But it does have the stock tank (now). Parts may have been returned to stock for the first sales ... don't know.

Thank you, so should I assume that the first owner possibly went through this mod?

What other signs should I look for?

My guess is the previous owner had an aftermarket muffler on the bike and put the stock muffler back on when he decided to sell the bike.
I see no control cables on the EXUP pulley.

This kind of thing pisses me off. The previous owners not knowing which one of course. Someone has done an half arsed job making the bike look stock instead of selling it with the aftermarket exhaust. Fair enough returning it to stock but do it right and tell the bloke anything that is done but now the new owner is left wondering in what half mod'd half stock state it is left in. I know they wouldn't have made money back on the exhaust as part of the sale but now the new owner is chasing his tail on a bike he is not familiar with.

There are plenty of technical guides here which could show some of the common mods http://www.wrrdualsport.com/tech-guide

And the guys on this forum are great. Sorry end on my rant. I am sure like most of us you will see the value gained from these mods and do some of them anyway. It really does wake the bike up. On the plus side you have a good excuse to get to know the bike well and give it a good once over.

Thank you guys. I took the seat off and removed the side panels. I'm adding a few more pictures. If you could tell me if you see any other mods let me know please. In fact if you see anything I should do seeing the state the bike's in I'm all ears!

I found out that the tool box, although there ... was empty ... I think that's cheap (which is concerning) so I'm reasonably certain there are other places for me to look and bring things back to life. I'm hoping you can shower me with your expertise. I will continue to research blogs, forums, partzilla and stuff ... but appreciates a kick start.

View from the top: it appears as though a "diaphragm" was removed. So, based on research, this happened?
http://rickramsey.net/WR250Rmods.htm#flapper

Another view of the EXUP without the side panel.

Anything else that pops out?

And a view from the left side. I can't see anything out of the ordinary but I have a feeling I'm missing something there.  There just seems to be a lot of nothing below the battery.

The diaphragm removed and the flapper glues down is not a bad idea this was the first mod I did. It helps open the airbox up a little. This is know at the flapper mod delete etc.

Can you just check or take a photo with the airbox door open. There is another mod called the ultimate airbox mod. It is in that link from my previous post.
This is one that is best left until a fuel programmer is on the bike so it does not run too lean. Looks like it probably has not been done yet from the pic but hard to see.

Do you have any plans for the bike or any mods in mind? Do you want it back to complete stock? Stock parts are available from the guys if you are chasing anything there is a WTB/ FS section.

Looks like the EXUP servo motor has been removed and the AIS (air injection system which injects fresh air into the exhaust) has been either tampered with or (hopefully) correctly removed.
Make sure that lower short hose connected to the airbox boot that looks like it's just sitting there doing nothing is securely blocked off and does not leak.

Since the diaphragm on the airbox inlet has been removed, you should check to be sure the small-diameter vacuum hose that once operated it and was once connected to the throttle body nipple is securely blocked off.
There should be something on the throttle body nipple effectively blocking it off without a leak - either a securely fastened rubber cap or the original hose cut short and securely blocked.
Pics and tips here:
http://www.wrrdualsport.com/tech-guide/air-intake/68-flapperrem

The battery has been replaced.

As with any used bike, scrutinize the air filter and engine oil (service/replace the air filter and change the oil and oil filter).
The Owner's Manual and Service Manual are the books to have.

Thanks ... At this time I really just want to make sure that all is in good order, modded or not. My main concern is that one of the previous owners would have modded the bike heavily but removed some of his parts, and as such the bike may be in a poor state.

Sorry I was not overly clear. There are two places to look probably not easy to get a pic up inside the airbox. I have included the link so you can see how they remove the bottom part of the snorkel. The first place to look is the rivets that hold on the snorkel. Have they been damaged to make the snorkel piece removable. This is only to get access to free up the bottom half of it. The other part is to feel or stick you phone up the inside of the airbox and have a look at the underside of the snorkel, the top of the airbox. You will see from the pictures what the factory one looks like.

http://www.wrrdualsport.com/tech-guide/air-intake/77-airboxmod

Back to the mods. I started with a new stock bike and looked at an exhaust and fuel programmer. I am still waiting on the exhaust as it is on back order but I did not want to buy them both at once should ship next week  wings . I shouted myself the fuel programmer from the kids at Christmas. It really does help the bike along. It lugs better and pulls a bit harder. I am keen to add the exhaust and open up the airbox more than the flapper mod. I looked at both the FMF fuel programmer and the PCV which has really good reviews. They both technically do the same job as adding fuel but are almost as different as the WR25OR and WR250F. But they also have a different price tag. The FMF is about $200 and the PCV with fuel and ignition is about $280. This is the best rice as RRP is about $380.  If you decide you want to get a fuel programmer let us know and We can go into more detail but there is not point hijacking your thread at the moment. Once you have it sorted and if you are wanting some performance gains which also translates to more torque and a little bit more down low which the bike does benefit more from I would suggest you look at a fuel controller and slip on exhaust of your choice and a high flow air filter. You can also then think about the airbox mods if you wish.
