So you're asking how long would a competent shop, with all the proper tools and machines take to do that?

If they are charging you by the hour for labor I'd guess somewhere in the two-three hour range. Closer to two hours I should think.

You can most likely reduce the costs if you take the wheels off at home, and remount the wheels yourself as well.

What price were you quoted?

So a few years ago I had Cycle Gear replace inner tubes and mount new tires (that I did not buy from them). I took wheels off bike and remounted wheels myself. Here's the break down from that.

motokid wrote:
So tell me, what you think about these prices?????

Front Tube: $16.99 (special for radial tires)
Rear Tube: $16.99 (special for radial tires)

Mounting and Balancing: $30.00 per tire = $60.00

(mind you - this is with wheels off bike)

Rubber valve stem long: $2.99 each = $5.98

Total cost: $99.96

(all amounts are US dollars)

What I get for that is an experienced tire mechanic not trashing my brand new tires (like I might by accident), not trashing my rims (like I might by accident) and if they screw up the tubes while mounting they replace at no charge to me.

I'll have some piece of mind that things are done properly.

Does that sound reasonable????

I was not thinking I'd be spending a hundred bucks for this shit.

Next time I definitely skip replacing tubes.
That would bring back closer to $50.00

So I can imagine if I brought them my entire motorcycle and they did everything - that total cost of labor, tires, tubes, and everything would be closer to $600 depending on tire costs.

Your the man motokid! Thank you it seems like they were only hitting me with 2 maybe 2.5 hours labor - it's actually just the salesman type BS I can't stand I catch him trying to bump up prices on me all the time! Once I learn some more I will have the confidence to do these things myself! Thanks pal

At the most any shop should be able to do both front and rear tire changes in 1.5 hours with you taking them the entire bike. If you take them in loose i would say just unnder an hour. It does not take that long to remove and reinstall the wheels. Be aware that many shops will in my experience incorrectly inclate your tires....usually too much air pressure i have found. And they may or may not correctly align and tension the chain. So i always double check them myself.

Thanks fly I have faith in the mechanic himself he has done other things nicely- it's just the sales guy - I always do my research on whatever I want /what each part costs because every time he quotes me a price on something I say no way I can get it for this much and he says ok I will give it to you for that- it's just the salesman attitude kinda pisses me off/ especially when I try to give them the business- that's ok soon I will be mechanically inclined with all this - the guys I hooked up with riding are knowledgable and are teaching me a lot! (Shout out to zoltan and martinnj) from our WR family!!!!! Great guys and great riders!!!!! Thanks everyone for all your help always!!! Peace YAM

Hey Phillyride, it isn't that hard to swap WR tires. I am not all that handy and I put a heavy duty tube in my front tire this winter working with tire spoons in a hour and half. I use a harbor freight static balancing stand.

The rear tire was tougher so I had to bring it inside to warm it up. If you learn to use tire spoons then you can fix a flat on the trail if needed. There a number of videos to show techniques. The big secret is to realize that if it is too hard then your doing something wrong.

You should be able to change your own tires in about 1 1/2 hours.  The only cost might be a couple of band-aids and a bottle of beer.  Those trick (means expensive) bead breaking tools from Motion Pro are a big help too.

From what I have read it is a good idea to run the tires at 25 to 30 PSI for about 100 miles to get them seated, then drop down to your regular PSI, I run front at 18 and rear at 15, this may be old school stuff now, the mechanic at the shop I bought my WRR at told me that, and he was kind of old like me hahaha cheer`s

If you do any serious riding off the beaten path then trust me on this... you really want to change the tires yourself.

The first time you do it will be a pia but you will learn how to do it which is important since generally if you get a flat on tires with tubes you will likely have to pull the tube on the side of the trail and either patch it or replace it. Trust me on this too.. learning how to do this on the side of a trail is not the best way to learn.

Once you do this a few times you will learn what to carry and some techniques on how to change the tube/tire. From there you can figure out what tools you will want to carry with you on long rides.

Just a suggestion.

I'm going to hook up with one of my buddies when they do their tires then I will be golden! I don't know lack of confidence-the easy way out - I'm not sure what it is but that's the way I will learn it the best! But thank you again your knowledge is always much appreciated!!!!! You never know it may bite me in my arsh! It may be on the trail but then I will have the help of my riding buddies who know a sh--load more than I do!!!!
