My X failed Delaware inspection today!!!! budah

No rear fender.

When ever you modify or remove stock parts. Keep them. You never know when you'll need them.

My FmF Q4 exhaust wasn't an issue (this year - I expect soon it will be a problem).

I must re-install factory turn signals to front (found that out last inspection) as the hand guard signals are not kosher with code. budah

This year they decide my fender (or lack there of) is an issue.

I expect one day they'll fail me for not having stock colors and stickers. baldy baldy baldy

Good advice.

I put my stock rear fender back on to keep all the mud off my back and tail light.

I think one of the guys in the For Sale section was selling a lot of stock X parts including the rear fender.

Wow, that sucks.

I found the DE inspection requirements, see pg. 71:

http://www.dmv.de.gov/forms/veh_serv_forms/pdfs/Vehicle_Inspection_Manual.pdf?042215

Pretty strict, even more than PA. Not sure that it adequately defines what a "fender" is, you could argue the plate itself is acting as a rear fender.

And I suppose one day they'll require us to put a helmet on before walking outside.

Would a rubber mudflap pass inspection or does it have to appear stock?

I have my stock fender. Just hate to remove something that passed two years ago, and two years before that.

Plus I REALLY HATE putting that stock piece of shit back onto my bike. BOOM

Im going to be putting the tusk rear fender/tail light kit on my WRR once it shows up, it looks alot like what comes on ktms, betas gasgas, etc, that'll be a couple of weeks tho because the other stuff I ordered with it is held up for a week, its only 40 bucks in canada, so 20ish in the US lol.

Its in between the giant stocker and the tiny drc edge, which I didnt like btw, it looked good but sucked for a dual sport light as any mud/water you rode through got it so dirty you couldnt see it, it'd be fine if you never go offroad tho.

The tusk light should keep the mud off the light so cars can see me. thumb

Think how great life would be without all that regulation. You could get your 10 year old a full time job. It would always be a mystery in the meat department.

Well, a few hours of digging through a variety of bolts and parts and crap and I got my X through Delaware inspection.

Had to completely un-install the edge tail light, and re-install the stock crap.

Looks like hell now, but it's legally tagged for two more years.

Something else to consider. Reflectors on the sides of your bike are required in some states. Delaware in one of them.
Orange in front and red in back. If you remove reflectors from bike, be sure to keep them some place where you can find them again.
You never know when you'll need them. budah

Now I just have to decide if I'm gonna leave the stock crap on, or go through this hassle every two years. :hmmm:

Come to Missouri. We can get by with about anything. Don't even have to have signal lights. The rules say that if it has tail and signal lights, they must function, tail light must be red on color and also have one red reflector. Signals are to be amber.

There is no safety check for bikes in this province .. The down side is seeing the less savy crowd running street bike tires bald as a baby's ass.

I would go through the hassle each time, but that's just me. I would also make some easy quick disconnects to make it simple as well

It seems odd that the turn signals on the handle bars do not pass since they come standard on some bikes. The Ducati Hypermotard line come with lights in the hand guards.

Technically if you move a light, or replace it with a non-DOT approved light, from any of the approved FMVSS location (ie manufacturers stock location) or change the location of the license plate the vehicle is no longer street legal.

The Ducati was FMVSS or DOT approved with those lights in the hand guards.

Yep.  The People's Republic of Delaware.

After seeing the SCOTUS decisions of yesterday and today, however, I'm not surprised.  After watching the Chief Justice release an opinion Thursday that he turned around and criticized himself for doing it the following day, you just have to want to cry.  Say goodbye to the concept of the rule of law - we now have a SCOTUS which is an unelected super-legislature which makes law, not just interpretes it.

To the point at hand, we've had several incidents I'm aware of over the years where police/inspectors decided words didn't have meaning, and the law said whatever they said it meant, not the normal and regular meaning of the statutes.  The rest of the police and vehicle inspectors can be doing the job the way it is normally done - it just takes one or two on a crusade.  My brother had to make long drives back home from where he lives to attend traffic court because the brand onlays on his brake lights were considered by one of the Nazi whack'os to "obscure" the brake light.  The judge agreed that was stupid and tossed out the charges - but it didn't get him back his days of work, the cost of gas, etc.

PostSubject: Turn Signal Requirements   Edge Tail Light Now Fails Delaware Inspection EmptySat Jun 27, 2015 6:18 am

An earlier post provided the Delaware Inspection requirements so I read through and saw an issue. Failure occurs if "Turn signals are inoperative, weak, or do not flash. If size is less than 3-1/2 square inches of luminous lens on 1974 or newer models. Rear must be a minimum of 9
inches of separation from center of lense and 16 inches on the front" The 3 1/2" of Luminous lense would not be met with most of the add on lights in the hand guards plus there also needs to be 3 1/2" of reflective material. Another issue would be on the rear turn signals, there needs to be a 9" separation between turn signals which may not pass if the mount was converted from OEM. When the law was written LED lights where probably not used and the law will be modified eventually. But it may be a while since while reading I saw the Delaware inspection laws do not allow a-uo-ga horns. It has been a few years since they were popular.
I worked in a PA inspection station for years an had times when special attention was placed on certain things which made no sense. The one that sticks out for me is many people were converting vans and at the time were putting curtains in the windows which was a no-no but someone could buy a van with solid steel sides and add a aftermarket window but still not put a curtain on it.

Well.. this news sucks! Just ordered an R which is sitting in Bear, DE for the stator replacement so sometime next week I'll pick it up. I am ordering the Edge2 and the Zeta XC handguards w/signals for it. Guess I'll make sure I hit the Inspection station first and keep parts for the next inspection. An evening spent with tools, tunes and a beer or two.. nothing wrong with that!  cheers  freaky  cheers

Last time I said that I left the garage forgetting to bolt down the front drivers seat of the mustang... :nono:

Edge Tail Light Now Fails Delaware Inspection Empty
PostSubject: Re: Edge Tail Light Now Fails Delaware Inspection   Edge Tail Light Now Fails Delaware Inspection EmptyFri Oct 02, 2015 1:20 pm

Back in my cop days, when you attended an MVA, things like lights, auto glass, etc that violated legislated requirements having do with size, brightness, clarity, height above the ground, etc got noted on the accident form regarding that vehicle in the accident.

The cop processing the accident usually didn't care, although he might or might not write an additional ticket about it.

But the insurance companies who got their copy of the accident form... oh, they cared very much!  You got hit from behind, you say?  Well no wonder, you put on illegal taillights that the following driver couldn't see because they weren't big enough, bright enough, whatever.  You couldn't see that vehicle merging from the right?  No wonder, look at all this illegal heavily tinted glass.

Well, this is going to affect your liability and our requirement to compensate you - or hold you at fault - quite a bit!  And we have lawyers!

That was a while ago, and different jurisdictions have different rules.  Maybe insurance companies behave a lot differently in different places.

But it is something worth thinking about.

And then there's the traffic cops who will just as happily write an illegal equipment ticket as a ticket for anything else.  And illegal lights/equipment tickets are great - you can't argue them like a radar ticket.  The equipment was either legal spec or it was not.  My brother just got ticketed for the custom covers over his truck brake lights; the cop took a picture with his ubiquitous cellphone while writing the ticket.

There's a reason that when I was a cop, we used to say we'd rather have a sister working in a whorehouse than a brother working as a traffic cop.

Choices, choices...
