dont know if this is old news or what, but i just got a letter form yamaha concerning a stator coil recall. the bummer is they wont send me the parts and i have to take my bike to a dealer which involves a ferry ride. what i fear the most is someone else touching her . i ve got a well earned distrust of dealers

Not old news but has been discussed, where are you that you received the notice, Can. USA, down under, and what year bike do you have.

You dont have to do the recall at all if you dont want to.
I had a 10 year old car that had a recall to fix the floor as it wasnt sealed properly and the car might rust out but seeing how I had over 400000 kms on the car already I didnt bother taking it to the dealer as it was damn near wore out anyway lol.

If its very hard or expensive to get to the dealer it may be cheaper and easier for you to buy the updated part and install it yourself.

I had the ecu recalled on my atv, I told the dealer it was a PITA to bring them the atv and ask if I could bring them the old ecu and install the new one myself and they let me but they wont give you new parts and let you keep the old ones.
Ask the dealer if you can bring them the old stator and get the new one and install it yourself.

Of course they would let you do it, they would have charged the company for the labor they didnt do, If mine gets recalled I will just let the dealer do it "no charge" a recall should not cost you anything. cheer`s

I have a 2012 WR250R I'm located in the US and I got a letter for the recall in the mail. Took the bike down a day ago and it was ready in a couple hours. I'll be going to pick it up later today. Pretty easy process. However when you call your dealer make sure they have the part in stock, almost had a problem with that.

Call the dealer, give them your VIN and they will check if they have the  stator and set up a date for the install.
I had no issues with the stator, but they showed me the one they replaced and over 1/2 the coils were burnt.
09 over 20 000 km.

I bought my 2013 with 525 miles on it a few weeks ago and saw the recall here. I called the nearest dealer and they looked up the VIN and said I could bring the bike in and they would order it at that time or I could pay over the phone and bring the bike down when it came in. I did the latter and dropped it off this morning. Pretty painless.

I am confused, what did you have to pay for.
The recall is free.

had mine done a couple weeks ago. Always a pleasure to go to my local dealer! Anyone know any particulars of why they recalled them? scratch

Well, I picked the bike up from the dealer, then looked down at the case and saw this.

stator coil recal 20150910
Anything wrong with this picture? (looks like the picture rotated but you can still see what happened)

Make sure you double check the dealers work, I can't believe they over-looked this. My bike could have lost oil from this not being tightened. Never going to that dealer again.

Well something is really screwed up with the guard on the sprocket as the bolt is sticking out underneath and the guard does not look right either. ????

Looks like there is some blue RTV squishing out from the cover. Is that right or was a new gasket suppose to go between?

OK now I see it. Left a bolt sticking way out under the front sprocket guard. Shog

Curious if the oil HAS to be changed when the stator is replaced????
I ask because my stator was replaced last week, and oil in the sight glass still looked black. Changed the oil last night and sure looked like the same well used oil that was in it when I took her in for the stator upgrade.

If they lay the bike down on it's side they don't have to drain the oil.

Brilliant !!
That had not occurred to me. Was obvious they had taken my skid plate off, which left me scratching my head. What you said makes sense. If that's what they did, then kudos to their bean counter... and DRATS!!! ... had to use my own Yamalube.

Funny my dealer said part of the recall was an oil change, guess all dealers are differant, bet yours charged yamaha for the oil change, just saying.

Maybe they were cranky about the desert tan spray paint covering the Yamaha Blue usa
...or they realized at the last minute they were out of 15W-50. I'll ask them if they have a few quarts they can spare when I'm back in town, and thanks for the heads-up on the recall wording.

Update on the 'included' oil change. My dealer said, Quote;

"I talked to the service manager and  reviewed the recall procedure. Some oil is removed during the recall but not all. They do not replace the filter or oil completely unless requested by the customer.
The recall call for topping off the oil only as needed. So he only added oil so it mixed with oil and may look dirty." (end quote)

Suspect
Perhaps the recall wording (regarding the oil) is ambiguous... manufacturers can be sneaky like that. Very happy

Moral of the story... When/if you get your stator replaced, request the complimentary oil change.

Just got mine back, took 2 weeks, they had on my paperwork $39.99 for the work but since it took so long for Yamaha to send them the stator I left for free. Got it home and the oil wasn't changed so I did it my self. Typical dealer crap that I always encounter unfortunately.

Don't let them scam you into thinking you got off with not having to pay for the recall.  No one should have to pay anything for the recall.  The labor you saw is probably what is being paid by Yamaha.

I called and gave my dealer my vin, they called me once the stator was in (about two weeks), I dropped the bike off in the morning and it was ready for me to pick it up in the afternoon.  There were no charges for the work.

I'm in the UK. Myself and 2 chums have 2009 model WRRs. None of us got a recall but 2 of us have rung our local dealer who has confirmed that the stator plates need changing. Mine took 2 weeks to arrive but I've not had chance to drop her off for the work to be done yet.

I had my stator recall done yesterday at SunSports in Ft Myers. My stator didn't look bad at all. Four or five coils showed a small amount of darkening at 6435 miles. I had them spoon on and balance a new 606 on the rear while I was there. As mentioned earlier, they don't automatically change the oil. My bike had been sitting for a long time waiting for me to replace the fuel pump so I changed the oil and flushed the radiator when I got the new fuel pump in. I didn't have more then a hundred or so miles on that oil but I told the kid to change it anyway for a good flush. Good marks go to SunSports. No charge for the oil. Good people in the service department.
