Can I get a once over? Empty
PostSubject: Can I get a once over?   Can I get a once over? EmptySun Jan 14, 2018 4:04 pm

Hiya, I just picked up a 2013 WRR with almost 8000 miles. I was wondering if you guys could look over these pictures, and suggest what I'm missing, if something needs replaced, or if anything has been done to it I should know about. I'm still looking through forums, so if I figure anything out, I'll just update the thread.

It looks like it's had a pretty hard life so far, and I probably paid far too much, but it's too late to worry about that now. The dealer said they went through and serviced everything, but I'm really doubting that based on things I keep finding (handguard loose, dirt under shock socks, airbox full of what looks to be mud, headlight fairing missing a bolt, etc.). I got a new battery and a tank of gas though, so I guess I've got that going for me... Rolling Eyes

Anyway, before/after I cleaned some of the surface dirt out from under the seat. There's a disconnected plug coming off the harness there (bottom next to the left frame rail). It's an open plug (probably needs taped off). It looks like the servo for the airbox was removed as well. Does this plug go to the servo?
EDIT: Yep. This is from the servo. I'm gonna clean it up and tape up the plug just to keep stuff out of it.

The air filter and air box seemed to be filled with some sort of grease/mud mixture. So at this point, I know I will have to either clean/replace the filter, possibly remove the airbox and clean it (dunno how easy that is yet), and hope nothing went farther up the intake.
EDIT: Looks like fully removing the airbox is an ordeal... So, I'll just do my best to clean it for now.

First glance on the front of the engine, I believe the AIS was removed? Please confirm if I'm right. I'm going to look up the mod just to make sure everything was taken care of.
Some surface rust on the frame. I've never dealt with this before, so I assume brush it off to bare metal and paint it?
No guards on the front of the bike. I assume the previous owner broke them and never replaced them.
EDIT: Yep. This was AIS. I don't see the plug related to it, but it's probably tucked away. I'll look later.

Nothing majorly wrong with the back as far as I can tell. Tool kit is gone. Helmet lock is gone. Not sure if the exhaust system is rusty yet or just red clay mud like everything else.

Gas tank has a dirt bike looking cap? I thought these had a lock/key on the tank, or is that the WR250X? Or do I have an aftermarket 3 gallon tank (probably figure that out whenever I fill it up)?
The rest of the front is... well used... Scuffs on the handguards and front fender/headlights. I didn't notice any obvious road rash, so I assume this just spent a lot of time offroad.
EDIT: After a little bit of research, this does look like the black IMS tank. Something I don't have to buy now.  wink

Other than this, mostly cosmetics. Whoever put the turn signals on did a poor job, so I will fix those at some point. The tires look new (still have the little nubbins all over the tread). All the lights and electronics function.

I'd appreciate any help or advice you can offer. If you notice any aftermarket parts or mods on it that are noteworthy that I missed, please let me know. And if you have any mods to suggest, that'd be awesome too thumb .

Thanks everybody.

Howdy.

Does it run?

From the looks of that air filter element, whoever said they serviced "everything" misspoke.
In fact, I feel the previous owner has gotta' be nuts to let it get that filthy in the first place.

I'd buy a new air filter, change the engine oil and oil filter, grease the chassis bearings, and clean/lube/replace anything that wasn't working in a like-new manner.

If you don't already have a copy, buy the Yamaha Service Manual.

It seems to run fine. I've never ridden anything quite like this (my other bike is a Ninja 1000 with a lot of mods, so this is a huge difference), and I know it's not supposed to be speedy or torquey, but it feels kind of... low on power. I assume half the problem is it's trying to breathe through mud though.

I think the only thing the dealer actually did is change the oil, the battery, and maybe the tires since they look new other than where I've ridden it some.

Everything more or less works, it's just used and abused.

EDIT: For the air filter, is there any reason to get something like a reusable K&N, or just keep stock stuff? I know air filter threads are as bad as oil threads, but I didn't know if you legitimately gained anything on these bikes considering all the airbox changes people make.

I wouldn't assume that. The pics don't show everything but from what I see it obviously wasn't cleaned but I don't see anything that indicates punishment--the swingarms, engine, etc., don't show the signs you often see if someone was raising hell. Of course if they only rode on roads at max throttle for all 8k there could be hidden damage, but other than that it takes a lot to do damage in 8k to these things.

Get a magnetic oil drain bolt and check it and the filter carefully for a few oil changes. I'm not too surprised at the dealer's lack of effort. A lot of them don't see cleaning as being their problem. Hopefully they at least hooked it up and ran diagnostics. If you're a wrencher at all it would be worth servicing the bearings--swingarm, relay arm, wheels, upper/lower steering, which will give you a chance to clean up and see if anything looks problematic.

Other than that just ride it and enjoy.

For the air filter I'd stick with the foam type, which means you also need foam air filter oil and filter cleaner.

By the way, the foam air filters are cleanable and reusable, too:
You remove the foam filter element from it's metal guide, clean it with solvent (air filter cleaner), rinse with water, dry the foam, apply the foam filter oil and squeeze the oil all through the foam, squeeze out the excess oil, and put it back together.

When riding off-road, you do this a lot.

Ok. Started working on it just now. Looks like it's pretty dirty past the filter.
Is this level of filth normal, or am I looking at having to take the airbox out and clean it fully?

It theres dirt past the filter, clean it good for sure.
Inside the airbox, not so much of a problem, but clean the worst of it anyway.

Well, then I guess ripping this apart then, cause this isn't coming out easily at all.
I don't understand what all this red crap is in the metal filter body. Melted on filter? WTF? And was it all spray glued into place or something? Gah. Such a pain.

Looks like the guy used No Toil filter oil and the foam filter degraded.

Got the airbox and intake cleaned up sufficiently.
Further looking around and I find the coolant overflow was never capped...
Can I get a once over? 20180113
I think the front sprocket is hooked slightly...
Lower suspension linkage is caked in mud and probably needs greased.
Pretty sure the left fork is leaking...

Took the swing arm and suspension linkage apart and greased everything. Seemed a bit dry and plenty of dirt, but the bearings all seem fine after I cleaned everything up.
Cleaned up the rear caliper too. Piston was on the verge of getting stuck, and the slide pins were bone dry. Why did they make it so the caliper has to be in place before you can put the wheel on? Lining the rotor up inside the caliper is a huge pain. baldy

For the chain guide issue these things seem to have, should I be worrying since mine looks like it's dug into the guide already? After I put the swing arm and wheel on, I put chain tension at about 0.5" while on the kickstand per the manual.

Since you have removed the rear shock from the swingarm, now is a great opportunity to set the chain slack correctly: align front sprocket, swingarm axis, and rear wheel axis, and at that position set chain slack a tiny amount. Then put everything back together, and measure what the chain slack with the bike on side stand is; use that from now on as your standard for proper chain slack.

In the second picture of the swingarm, it looks like the chain has worn completely thru the guide and is chewing into the aluminum swingarm.  I tend to run a lot more slack in the chain than what is recommended in the manual to prevent this.  Also most other people here do not recommend running a 12 tooth sprocket for the same reason.  Check to see if you have stock 13-43 gearing.  Most gear it down to a 47 or 48 tooth on the back.

Swing arm guide needs to be replaced.

Thanks, I'll get one ordered. What kind of tension keeps this from happening? I know it uses to be more, but now it's only .5" according to the TSB?
The bike came with 13/43 gearing. I've replaced the chain and sprockets due to hooked teeth and stuck links, and I put on 13/45.

This is all the maintenance I've done so far
- New oil and filter (Castrol 10W-40 synthetic and K&N KN-140)
- Coolant flush and change (Prestone 50/50 premix)
- Brake fluid flush (Prestone DOT4)
- Cleaned and greased rear swingarm bearings and suspension linkage
- New OEM fork seals and dust seals with Motul 5W oil
- New 110 link chain, 13 tooth front sprocket, 45 tooth rear sprocket
- New NGK CR9EK spark Plug
- Zeta quick turn throttle and Protaper grips since the old tube and grips were chewed up
- New DRC signals and front mounts since the old ones were basically tapped on and poorly connected
- New OEM air filter and guide with Belray foam filter oil and cleaning the airbox
- Scrubbed calipers and greased the pins and rubbers
- General cleaning
- Remounting the headlight since the whole unit wasn't even attached
- Cleaned spark arrestor and re-tapped bolt holes and replaced bolts
- New oil filler cap o-ring since old one was missing

New Goodies:
- Tusk rear rack
- Flatlands racing skidplate. It already had the radiator guard

Let me know if there's anything else important I need to look into. It's a 2013 with about 7500 miles. I've done everything I can think of other than steering bearings (didn't have the spanner thingy), rebuilding calipers, or replacing brake lines.

Also, the spark plugs is below. Let me know if there's anything bad about this. I think it was just running rich since the old air filter was so clogged up.

Although lining up the sprocket, swingarm pivot and rear axle is correct for determining extreme tension on the chain, I believe as the suspension is further compressed to full travel, that is when the chain contacts the swingarm guide. Try using a cinch strap to compress the suspension fully then check to see if the chain will rub on the guide and adjust accordingly.

As for the spark plug, you are probably correct in assuming it is black from a clogged filter, but check it again after you have been riding for awhile to be sure.

What would be causing a higher RPM flat spot in power? It will pull seemingly normal up until some point, then it kind of feels like the power drops significantly, then it picks back up until redline. Since there's no tach, if I had to guess, something like 7k-8k or something.

Only modifications are the AIS and airbox flapper mod done by the previous owner. I did drop it a couple times out in the woods this weekend, but I don't know if that's related. Nothing seemed damaged.

Other than this, it's awesome.

EDIT: Nevermind. Figured it out. The hesitation issues got real bad on the way home from work today. The check engine light and code 46 popped up. Turned out that the negative on the battery wasn't even connected... at all... It was apparently just bouncing around and fortunately sat on the terminal so you could start the bike... Super... GAHHHH
