CNT Fuel Pump Replacement Empty
PostSubject: CNT Fuel Pump Replacement   CNT Fuel Pump Replacement EmptySun May 24, 2015 11:36 am

I just replaced my fuel pump and thought I'd pass the information along. I had the dreaded hot start issue on my 2010. Although the problem seems to be most common on the 2008 model, other years had the same problem, leading me to believe that a $300+ Yamaha factory replacement might not be any better than an aftermarket. Ultimately I opted to buy a kit that included a CNT fuel pump off of eBay ($30 or $40 versus $300+). The symptom that led me to believe it was a bad fuel pump was that the fuel pump wouldn't spin up when the ignition was turned on before starting. You can always hear the fuel pump whirr on when turning on the ignition. When hot, I'd turn the ignition on and get no sound at all. Waiting 15 or 20 minutes when it was about 65 or 70 degrees would always work, but the warmer it was the longer it would take. I suppose if it were 100 degrees, I might have had to wait a very long time.

The good: the fuel pump works great and completely cured the hot start issue I was having. I have about 500 miles on the bike now and have not had any issues. It is now much warmer too.

The bad: this was a kit which included the fuel filters as well. Unfortunately the opening on the new filter split when placing it on the new pump, so I had to use the old filter. This worked out fine since the old filter was fairly clean.

A couple of tips:

The old pump wasn't easy to get out of the plastic housing, but it was much easier to get off using a set of precision picks (available from Home Depot for about $5). Here's the link: Husky Precision Picks  The picks helped to pry the tabs up so the pump housing could be pulled apart.

There is a plastic tube that is very stiff and difficult to get off of the two housing pieces. I opted to leave it in place and not take it off. Instead, I bent the tube enough to remove the two housing pieces while keeping it connected. Some of the kits include a new tube, which would allow you to cut off the original tube and replace it. My kit didn't include this, so I tried to keep the original one in place. There was no way to get it off without cutting it, so I tried to bend it enough to get the two housing pieces apart. It worked for me, but I would probably get a kit with a new tube next time around. FYI, the kits with the tube don't use the same kind of material and use hose clamps instead. If I'd had a replacement tube, I would have just cut the plastic hose, allowing the two housing pieces to come apart much more easily. This is probably hard to visualize with out pictures (sorry about that). Suffice it to say, the two housing pieces are held together with tabs, but are also connected by this hose. With the hose cut, it would be easier to pull the pieces apart.

The repair took about 2 hours but could be done in about an hour once you know what you're doing. I figure I made about $125/hr by doing it myself. Very happy

Awesome review bro! I have the fuel pump problems on my 08 wrx also. I actually took my pump apart before ordering anything just because if the pump broke I would have to buy a new assembly anyways. I opted for the Felco pump "felcoproducts" fuel pump for under $20 shipped on eBay. They say it comes with the pump, hose, 2 clamps, and filters. Being my bike only has 2000 miles (yes a 2008 wr250x with only 2000 miles) I do not plan to use that aftermarket fuel filter. I have searched and searched for anyone using the eBay fuel pumps and haven't seen much. I hope this cures my embarrassing fuel pump issue.

Well I installed the felco pump today. Looks almost exactly like oem. I sounds a little different that the oem pump when it primes but so far it runs the same. This weekend im planning on going on a long ride with the bike I will deff report back after about a 5 hour ride in. so far its worth $20 for now.

Rode the bike today approximately 25 miles. Runs great to me. Time will tell though. So if your on a budget go ahead and pick up the Felco Fuel Pump from ebay. $20 will get you back on the highway!

CA-Cycleworks sells a pump upgrade for our bike. SKU # FP-WR
It is not plug and play.
It requires cannibalizing the stock assembly, and grafting in the upgraded pump. In the end you have an assembly which is stock in all respects.
I would provide links to the process, but my account is too young (under seven days since I joined)
I pack the CA-Cycleworks pump as a back-up contingency, since my factory warrantied replacement pump (installed by my dealer) has been working flawlessly for about 6,000 plus miles.
My WRR is a 2011 model, and it began to sputter in upper gears, ultimately crapping out altogether (the fuel pump)

The good news is there is a NEW fuel pump part number, for 2014 and up WR's, and it appears to be revised in such a way that it does not/will not fail... so far.
Old part number 3D7-13907-00-00 (2008-2013)

new part number 3D7-13907-10-00 (2014----)

I wonder if this newer revised version will work on a 2008?

It will. The newer pump is backwards compatible guaranteed.
Worked in my 2011, which came equipped with the same part # as a 2008, and now uses the 2014 and up revised pump.

Glad this fuel pump thread is healthy.. i don't think there is anyone that rides long distances.. that doesn't think about a pump possibly crapping out in the middle of nowhere .

CNT Fuel Pump Replacement Empty
PostSubject: Re: CNT Fuel Pump Replacement   CNT Fuel Pump Replacement EmptyTue Jan 12, 2016 1:23 am

Hey folks, firstly thanks so much for this thread - it was super helpful to me during the install of the CNT fuel pump. With that said, I've been experiencing some weird behavior since I installed it earlier this afternoon. Basically, the engine turns over very nicely (better than before) but the fuel pump never primes when I turn the key like it normally does. The first time I tested with the CNT pump it primed for a brief ~1.5 seconds, but it hasn't primed since (even waiting several hours before testing again).

Is this normal behavior? I'm a little worried there may be something wrong so I tested:

1) Cables nice and tight - yep
2) Power going to pump at the cable level - yep
3) Double check loose cable behind radiator* - yep, it's fine (now)

Is there anything else I should check, or perhaps be worried about? Really hope I don't have to go another 300 out of pocket for a stocker pump. Some folks on the WR250R + WR250X Facebook page seem to think my pump is probably fine and that the no priming may be normal behavior, but I'm slightly worried about it not priming.

* This was a suggestion from another forum, and indeed the cable was loose but it's all tightened up now

I have one of those in my 2012: the -10 pump. I got a measly 7k kilometres out of the oem. I fitted an ebay cheapy, which did not last very long. I coughed up the cash for the updated oem, and so far it's hung in for about 11k, I think it is. That's almost 600 hrs of engine time fwiw. Bloody fuel pumps and stators. I keep wondering which will be next! Again!

PostSubject: Re: CNT Fuel Pump Replacement   CNT Fuel Pump Replacement EmptyWed May 18, 2016 1:20 am

Guys,
re-opening this thread.
I have an IMS 4.7 gal tank ready to go on and i want to address the fuel pump in my stock '08 while i am at it. Its an age old debate by now. Reading through the threads over the years, it seems like it is best to avoid the cheapo eBay pumps and go with a quality replacement like the CA Cycleworks unit ($135). However, even that requires cannibalizing and grafting on the pump into the innards of the stock pump assembly which was not designed to come apart easily. I have not seen any photos/write-up about this process anywhere.
The only alternative seems to be to buy a replacement pump assembly from Amazon ($284). I can only hope that the latter has proved to be completely trouble-free so far?

If anyone knows of a write-up/video of the Cycleworks pump grafting, do share before i order the full assembly.

Shridhar
