Buying advice on wr250r in UK

PostSubject: Buying advice on wr250r in UK   Tue May 17, 2016 4:45 am

Hello all, really hope some people can give me quick advice. Been looking for a dual sport in the UK, pretty up to speed on the merits of whats out there. Was pretty set on a CRF250l for all its short comings as a first bike, mostly on road seems ok.

Not sure if people elsewhere in the world know but the WR250r is no longer sold in the UK. However occasionally they do come up for sale second hand. On paper we know it kicks ass over other 250 daul sports. My concern is it too rare in the UK, will I be lumbered with surprise expensive bills on parts and sevicing, having to get parts imported etc. Or are the guts of the machine made up of parts common to other Yamaha's.

aside from ownership, running etc, how would it be as a first bike, I'm 6ft, way over 25yr, have full licence, but really like the idea of a dual sport, for green lanes, trying a bit of off road, and having something I can enjoy.

what is the likely prospect of resale after I have owned it, DRZ etc seem to hold value. What I mean is if I buy for example £3k am I likely to see it only fetch £1.5k in a couple of years as rare, or is it the opposite and these rarely available bikes get snapped up.

Thanks in advance. B

The WR250R was made for a rider you describe yourself as.
Go for it.

If the WR250R was sold in your country as an official model for your country, I don't see a problem.

It has not been a problem for me to order Yamaha parts for a Yamaha motorcycle sold in my country, even when the bike was discontinued a few years earlier.

I order my Yamaha parts from a Yamaha motorcycle dealer.

I can see parts being a problem 30 years down the road when it becomes an antique, but it hasn't been a problem ordering parts here in the USA whenever I've been in your situation.

I sometime get the feeling that some people expect all kinds of weird seldom-needed parts to be on the Yamaha dealer's shelf at that very moment (keep dreaming), or when some people say they are having trouble finding parts, they mean that the local NAPA or Auto Zone (car parts stores) couldn't help them, or they didn't see any used parts on EBay that morning.

you should have no problems finding parts. A quick google brings up enough pages in the UK that sell oem parts. Actually seems quite a bit cheaper than Germany actually! Just comparing the front master cylinder kit (60€ in Germany, 36£ in UK and 15$ in US). Still gotta figure out the reasoning behind those huge price gaps GAHHHH

If you find one in good condition I doudt you'll ever have anything other than the standard maintenance to do (which you can do yourself). If you do bring it to a dealer make sure to tell them at least 3 times its a WR250R. Have had it confused as a WR125R (actually happened) and a WR250F (also actually happened) at the yamaha dealer (both much more common than the WR250R here). But once they get it, servicing cost is the same as other bikes.

Best of luck on your search! Let us know if you find one thumb

Hey thanks, first response, yep pretty sure it will be a good purchase, I am just overly cautious. I take your point that Yam may not have parts in all the time. Just dont want to end up in a situation where I take it for a service in a years time, and told there is a special widget that costs half the price of the bike.

Most of the feed back from what I am hearing is all good.

Learn the basics yourself, and the bike will never see a dealer again...
