FMF Powercore & no programming hesitating when cold? Empty
PostSubject: FMF Powercore & no programming hesitating when cold?   FMF Powercore & no programming hesitating when cold? EmptyWed Jan 18, 2017 8:57 pm

[I posted this on thumpertalk and was directed to this forum as it's more active on wrr technical stuff. Thanks!]

Greetings.  I am the happy owner of a new-to-me 2013 WR250r with 3,000 miles.  The bike is stock with the exception of an FMF slip-on pipe with the OEM header and an engine guard.  The previous owner warned me that the bike is "cold" and it takes a few minutes after the engine is started for it to run smoothly.  If I don't warm up the bike for 2-4 minutes the bike will hesitate when giving it throttle and may even stall.  Once the bike reaches normal operating temperature it rides fine.

One thing worth mentioning is that the exhaust power valve part of the EXUP system was reinstalled with the FMF.  Not sure why or what difference this makes.

I have searched the forums and found cases of poor performance when cold, with different opinions as to whether this is normal or not.  It's not really a problem, but it bugs me.  My other fuel injected bikes don't need a warm up before riding.

Does the bike have a problem?  Any thoughts?  What I learned in Thumpertalk is that the FMF is less restrictive than the stock pipe and therefore without any programming the bike is running a bit leaner than in stock form.  This would be more noticeable with a cold engine.  So my takeaway is to go back to a pure OEM exhaust config or get an FMF programmer and try one of the programs out there.   Do you guys think this is the issue?

Thanks!

Sounds normal to me, really.

The bike probably would have better throttle response with a fuel programmer, something that practically all emissions-regulated bikes have in common.
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the bike did this with the stock muffler and the EXUP functioning.

What the EXUP reinstallation probably refers to is that if you unplug the EXUP servo motor when installing an FMF slip-on muffler, the bike's indicator light will light up the "check engine" light.
Leaving the EXUP servo motor in place and plugged in but not having it actually moving an EXUP valve "fools" the bike's electronics into thinking it is still working.

You may be able to improve things merely by adjusting the CO settings.
There are threads about this on this forum.

Myself, I simply warm the engine up for a couple of minutes before riding off.

My bike does the same thing when its cold, Its all stock except i unhooked the airbox flapper so it stays open all the time. Even before that it was hesitant when cold.

I assume you are talking about the "lean" spot that happens when you roll on the throttle (just off idle) when the bike is cold.  It shows really well when exiting a corner in 2nd gear, hehe.  This issue is still there with the stock bike (thanks EPA).  Adding an exhaust without a fuel controller adds to the problem.  A fuel controller makes this lean spot go away much quicker in the warm up process (within a few minutes) and generally makes the bike run better overall....

My bike is mostly stock and I see the same thing when it is cold.

After some easy riding about 10 minutes and it is nice and warm - no more problem.

Guys, thank you so much, you're a great bunch! I rode the bike to work this morning, temps in the 40's and I experienced hesitation initially, but after 5 minutes or so the bike was running fine. Of course, because I haven't ridden another wr250r, stock or tuned, I don't really know how well my bike runs compares to others. May want to neighbor with local wr250r riders to do some comparisons and decide whether a programmer will make a difference.

I have the same problem, with FMF Q4 and also FMF programmer. I've tried to program it out, but no luck. The only improvement I did notice was bumping the CO up a few points when it's cold out. I've learned to rev it a bit higher when just starting out if cold.

Thanks for your thoughts! I ordered a new iridium spark plug to replace the existing OEM one, as per the Periodic Maintenance table (7K miles or 12 months and the bike is 3 years old) and was thinking of increasing the CO a few points, as it was suggested above.  The spark plug should give me an indication of whether the bike is running lean or not. I can live with this, but I'd prefer not to be bugging neighbors or anyone else with a loud Powercore idling until the bike is ready to go.

I found that bumping up the throttle position senser fixes the problem,

I have no such problem, my CO is bumped up a bit, and TPS adjusted. Dont recall the bike doing weird stuff before that tho'

Still running all stock. Bought mine brand new though... Had horrible hesitation or it'd take off like crazy. Like the throttle was a toggle switch. There's a bunch of posts on choppy throttle, co adjustment, and tps adjustment... Was night n day different on my bike from factory settings...

vid for co adjustment. Don't ground out the black wire. ground out the black wire instead and you can test it out, run it in co mode without throwing the lean angle sensor code.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I may experiment a little with CO and TPS settings. Overall I am really happy with the bike but I haven't tried it on dirt yet. Hopefully soon!
