Steering shake/loose Empty
PostSubject: Steering shake/loose   Steering shake/loose EmptyWed Jun 01, 2016 12:57 am

My steering on my WR250X seems to be a bit loose.
If I pull on the front tire, the fork seems to have some play.
I can also feel it while taking turns.
Is this something I can look at myself or should I just take it in and have the pro's look at it?

It is pretty easy to adjust your steering head bearings and I have always done it by feel. Check on you tube for a video (or get a manual) but it is basically the same on any bike.

- Loosen the steering stem nut on top of the triple clamp (may have to remove handlebars to get at it)

- Loosen upper triple clamp fork tube bolts.

- Under the upper triple clamp is a collar that is used to set bearing preload - it should have notches in it. I use a punch and light hammer to tap it clockwise (tighten). It won't take much. You want to adjust that collar so you remove the play but the front end will move side to side freely and without any notchiness (too tight).

Note: When you are checking for play in the steering head, make sure you grab the fork tubes above the sliders.

- After you remove the play, tight up the steering stem nut, then the triple clamp fork tube bolts (use proper torque). re-instal handlebars and done. thumb

Thank You @CRFan1

Will give it a shot.
Wasn't sure if there was some kinda measurement for tightening it that only dealer's would be able to do it.
Your instructions sounds straight forward.
Will also try to dig up a YouTube video as well.

Cheers!

PostSubject: Still no fix   Steering shake/loose EmptyWed Jun 22, 2016 11:57 pm

So I had to take my bike in to the dealership for the stator motor recall so i asked them to take a look at the front shake.
They said its because of the floating rotor. Does this make any sense? I am just not comfortable leaning on the bike around corners, still feels like something is loose. scratch
I also feel like its about to wobble when I hit speeds over 100kms, not sure if these two are related.
Anybody?

If you think the steering head bearings are loose, then you will have to put the bike up on a stand and do the work to find out.

The Yamaha Service Manual will show you the procedure, and it does give torque specifications on how much tension is put on the bearings.
It would be a good time to grease those bearings and seals, anyway.

Also, I would remove the top triple clamp to perform this procedure (as shown in the Service Manual) since there are two spanner nuts above the upper bearing, and these two nuts are locked together via a metal lock tab that slides over them with a rubber washer between them.

Are your wheels properly balanced?
Out-of-balance wheels can make a great bike feel like crap.
