I'm sure this has been discussed out here but I thought I would ask for some help. I just bought a 2016 WR250R after trading in my Versys 650 and selling my 2003 KLR 650....I'm lovin the WRR! I just installed Happy Trails Top and Side Racks with Pelican 1500 on the back and Caribou Commando Bags on the sides. I'm about 190 lbs and will probably be carrying less than 40 lbs of gear. Right now without the luggage filled, the bike seems to be somewhat bouncing in the back. If anyone can give me some pointers on set up, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am pretty new to the WRR as well, but I understand the stock shock is sprung for a 180 to 200 LB rider. you added 50 LBS, so you may be overloaded. All my dirtbikes in the past needed to have the sag set for me first. Including my Wrr. Once the sag is set, adjust damping and compression seperately. 1 click at a time until the shock responds like you want- need it to.. avoid big changes, rebound is most likely the adjustment you need to work on first based on your bucking analagy-- although compression can be too stiff.

Start at the factory recommended setting for comp. and rebound..

If the sag cannot be accomplished with preload- you need a heavier spring..

I am 6'1 and 185 lbs.  I adjusted my suspension to provide a firmer rider in the rear so I am not bouncing around.  I have Wolfman Soft Luggage and it works great when I am fully loaded. I need to weigh my fully loaded bags, but I estimate an additional 25 lbs in weight at most. That would put me at 210 lbs total weight. If I need to get to 200 lbs all in, I would rather lose 10 pounds than get a new suspension set up. Cheaper and healthier.

I have 1400 miles on my 2016 wr250r that I bought in the spring. I have spent almost all of those miles and every ride trying to find the right settings. I do about 60 percent street and 40 dirt, mostly dirt roads with some rough trails once in a while. I weigh 170 and ride spirited, not crazy, but I like to have fun. I used to race motocross, so I like my bike to handle well in the dirt, but still be stable on the road.

Sounds like you're getting a little pogoing in the rear. Try adding harder rebound. I think stock is 10, go like 5 for starters (3 is max). A lot of guys run max rebound, but I find it to be harsh and I try not to run any suspension settings at max one way or the other. Also the compression might be a little soft for your weight, so try adding a few clicks to see if that helps.

With much trial and error I think I like my current settings the best...

It will take some trial and error.
I finally had mine resprung and revalved a couple years ago and it is way better. I am pretty much in the same boat as you as far as weight and gear. I can see If I held onto the spec sheet for what was done if you would like? As far as rebound and dampening go, they are quickly adjusted to suit the terrain. Generally go soft on tight bumpy/rocky trails, and firm for faster, harder hitting but less sharp obstacles. I didn't replace the front springs because I had the X which has stiffer springs. I did have them revalved. If I were needing to replace the front springs, I might go with a fork swap from a yfz or something, which still might need tuning but will give you a better front suspension and more travel. I would and did do these mods before spending money on exhaust and programmers.

Compression and rebound are largely personal choice/riding style--start at stock settings and experiment a little at a time.  To handle luggage though you'll want to set your sag by tightening the preload on the spring.  Depending on your weight and how much weight you're carrying you might want to add a substantial amount of preload to the spring or upgrade to a heavier spring for it to handle well with luggage.  The problem with the WRR is practically speaking you need to pull the shock to set preload.  I think I had mine out 4 or 5 times before I got it right.  In theory the settings will be different between just you and you + luggage though practically you can probably find a setting that works for you for both.

Just took my WR250X on an 850 mile loop in Oregon/Washington. I'm 220lb w gear on and probably carrying another 50 lbs of gear (brought a phantom drone, camping gear, and fixit stuff. I'm currently on stock suspension, waiting for them to give out before getting revalves/rebuilds. I had to dial my preload in the back almost to where you can't see any threads. I was able to get 3.5" of sag in this position, and it rode fine, no pogoing, even on rough dirt roads. My compression damping is set up to max on the rear shock, and rebound is I think 2 or 3 clicks higher than standard. I added 1 click of compression and rebound damping to the front forks.

I then went trail riding the weekend after, and changed the rear back but didnt change the front. The front, even with just 1 click harder on the damping, didnt feel right. I took it back to stock while on the trail and it felt much much better. I didn't realize the settings were so sensitive, but I would try making changes and test riding to get the best feel.

here's video from the moto trip!

+1 to that. I moved my preload while the shock was on the bike, using the hammer/screwdriver approach. It took a while, to say the least. I would love to find a faster/easier way to do it next time, and I'm guessing it will require pulling the shock. Would love to put some sort of dial system in vs the spanner rings, especially if i start to do more self supported rides.

If the threads on the shock are clean and lubed with wd40 or something similar you can crack the lock ring loose on the pre load adjuster then grab the spring by hand and turn it to set your sag, this is pretty quick and easy. Even if you have to tap it the whole way with a hammer and punch its quicker than pulling the shock plus you will need to pull the shock off multiple times to get it right.
