Upgrading from stock 13/43. I think I need 112, just want to verify from those that have done it. Also I'll be going back and forth from 14 to 13 tooth counter sprocket, will the same size chain work for both? Thanks!

Yes, you will need a 112 link chain so you can run back and forth between 14t and 13t. Im running the exact same way. Provides excellent versatility with the front sprocket changes. I have a 112 xring chain, 2 front and 1 rear all by Primary Drive brand.

Fyi: the stock case saver doesnt fit with the 14t. You can run without, shave down the stocker to fit, or get a sandman case saver when using the 14t.

Thanks! I bought a 112 RK chain and 14t sprocket just in case the 13/48 is too low gearing for long road trips. I have a taller D606 in the back, so I think I'll be OK with the 13t countersprocket. I put a sandman case saver on recently, man are those nice! The matte black is aweseome! I'm going to try and change out my rear sprocket and chain this week and I'll get back with the results after riding it!

This setup work perfect for me. 13/48 around town and offroad, then 14/48 for trips. Top cruise speed at 13/48 is like 65. 14/48 will cruise better on trips and still be a little steeper than stock 13/43. Good luck with it.

Also highly recommend getting a speedo drd to fix youf speedo. Its like 21% fast at 13/48

So 13/48 will work with a stock 108 link chain? Where did you get the Sandman case saver? Thanks.

Also, I ordered 14/47 sprockets which I think will be slightly taller gearing with the higher 120/90 rear TKC80 tire.
But will need a 112 chain..
I also like switching from 13 to 14 for trips. Did similar with a DR650 and KLX250.

So I popped on the new sprocket and chain last week. I couldn't get the master link clip on all the way without a chain tool, so I took it to the local shop for a final pressing of the link to get the clip on all the way. I highly recommend not doing your own chain unless you have the tool, pliers don't have enough force. The weird thing is I don't notice a huge difference like some people on here do. It's better, but now it just feels normal, not too short gearing at all. I do, however, have a taller D606 on the back, but it's halfway worn. So maybe with the stock rear tire it's too short for the road? Regardless, I like it, doesn't want to stall all the time now from a stop in 1st gear and makes 6th gear more usable.

The 112 chain seems a little long, maybe I could've gone 110 because my rear axle is really far back now compared to stock chain. But maybe the 110 won't be long enough once I throw the 14t sprocket on up front too. I'm going back to stock tires soon, so I'll see how much shorter, if any, the gearing feels. I can still cruise at 70mph no problem, which is plenty fast for this bike on the road. The only difference is that now the speedo reads 78-80 when I'm really doing 70. Pretty much every speed I hit from 40-70 is 8-10 mph faster on the speedo, no biggie, easy to remember.

2stroke: check out this review on the case saver, there's a link on the bottom to buy one. They're the best on the market for our bike. I could only find this one and one from Zeta, which isn't as beefy as the Sandman case. I got the matte black and it's awesome! http://www.basherdesigns.com/2013/08/27/sandman-case-saver-kit/

I install all my clip-type links with water pump pliers, its no problem.

Hope you like your new kit, otherwise sprockets are cheap.

Guess I though vice grips would be best, now I know. Love the new setup, just feel normal now. Cruising speed is more like 65-70 now, but who wants to cruise 70-80 on a 250 dualsport anyways? I'm switching to the stock tires again, so I'll see if that makes it any shorter even though my D606 is toast now.

So update on 13/48 with the stock tires back on. I don't know if it made a huge difference changing tires or if I just got sick of clicking to 6th gear right away from a start or realizing my speedometer was 20% off and 70 was really 55mpg and to do actual 70 was near impossible with an indicated 90mph. So I switched to a 14 tooth front sprocket and it's so much better! 14/48 is the best of both worlds. I can hit an actual 70mph now and 6th gear is more of an overdrive now under 60 than a necessity with 13/48. It's still short enough to not bog out from stops or on trails, so for me, who does 60/40 probably this is the best of worlds. I'll have to see how I still like it when I go to a taller rear tire again, but for now, it's awesome!
