PostSubject: Newbie questions   Newbie questions EmptyThu Nov 03, 2016 8:49 am

Morning WR riders,
I am thinking about buying my first dirt bike. I currently own 3 other bikes, an 79 CVb650 cafe, 09 custom Vulkan 900, and CBR954RR. I work at Ride Motorsports as Entry Level Technician. we got an 08 WR250R on trade and I have the option to buy for 1400 USD .the bike has 2048 miles single owner, FMF exhaust, and PCv.
So I know very little about these bikes. I am more a street guy and do track days on my CBR.
Can I use the WR for freeway riding?
is there anything I need to look for before getting this one?

That sounds like a terrible deal. Spare yourself and let me have it Very happy But seriously, I didn't see any for less than three times that price when I was shopping.

And yeah, it'll handle the freeway. Mine usually cruises up Snoqualmie Pass on I90 faster than the average traffic, and it can pass nearly everything on I5 - unless they know we're racing.

Hey so 1400 is my price since I work here. They were going to ask 4100 for it. Employee can buy units for 100 dollars over purchased price. We paid 1300 for trade in . My co worker said that these WR are NOT for freeway use. Riding at 65 or 70 mph puts it pretty close to red line. I looked up gearing commander this bike tops out at 93 mph at 10k. At 70 mph it sits at 7400 rpm.

Jup, 74mph is just cruising for this bike. Over 3000rps left untill you find the revlimiter.
The bike will probably handle it way better than you wink

For comparison: My xt600 also has 3000rpms until redzone at the same speed.

Sand and repaint, same as any other painted metal part.

Oh great thank you. I had no idea.
So I ordered fork seal kit, since both are leaking, also going to remove swingarm and clean bearings and grease.

Yeah, give me a shout if you want to find some misadventure in the Cascades. I'm not exactly a pro, and the trails I know are limited to random spots where I've taken my Jeep, including Evan's Creek ORV. Lately I've been playing around by the pass, trying to soak it up before snow buries it again.

I'd view extended freeway as some form of torture.

That's what I'm thinking, it can't be good to cruise at 70 mph sitting at over 7000rpm for what ever distance. In work 3.5 miles away from home . I get on freeway for 2 exits.

I don't view 3.5 miles as "extended". It will be harder on you than the engine, but at that speed you have no extra. If you are fighting wind uphill plus a truck blast & need to get up & away it won't happen--in fact you will be going backward. Steering on bikes like these gets twitchy & if you are running knobbier tires than stock that's a death wish. And yes, the engine will be screaming at you all the while. You can hit off the tee with your putter but why would you want to?

This is a 250ccm bike, with a short stroke motor, its supposed to rev.

An R1 is redlining at 13750 rpms (and people even flash the ecu on theese to rev to 15000rpm), it has 4 cylinders, 250cc each. Surely 7000rpm is nothing for this bike. The same goes for our bikes.
Heck, bikes from 30-40 years ago reved to well past 13750rpm...

I have several rides with a couple hundred miles of interstate at 70mph, on full knobby tires, with lower gearing... Its nothing, come on guys.
At 70 you still have power left should you need it. Mine was loaded up with gear, and I didnt have to downshit once. Actually tried to accellerate up a hill, and even there I managed to gain speed. Im 6"7 and 220lbs for reference.

My bike has airboxmods and header + exhaust, but no powercommander ect.

As I said, it will be harder on you than the bike.

Thank you for the feedback. After little research essentially we have one cylinder of the R1. Currently I'm running street tires no knobies for me on the street. These tires grip like my 954..
I'm thinking about plugging in my pc5 to my laptop and see which map I'm running. Also installing a 2 way map switch so I can have 2 maps
