Buying a bike stand... Empty
PostSubject: Buying a bike stand...   Buying a bike stand... EmptySat Mar 06, 2010 8:44 am

...All my other bikes have had center stands so this was never an issue.

Now I need a bike stand to do basic maintenance. I know at least some dirt bike stands are too tall to clear my WR-R's approximate 11.5" ground clearance (*w/Flatland skid plate). I found this out when I borrowed a neighbor's stand and had to fiddle with it for several minutes to get it beneath the bike to jack it up.

I figure someone on here has shopped for a stand. So, what works well?

I was just at Motorcycle Superstore's site and there's about a half-dozen options but the specs aren't too clear on the height before lifting. Most of the stands I'm looking at are the foot-operated lever type and cost from $80-100.

Thanks!
David

yeah i have this same problem. i bought a FMF one from cycle gear and i have to roll my bike onto 2x4 to have clearance for the stand. I think DRC has a height adjustable one. just not sure if it will fit under the wr250r.

I have an atv/dirtbike jack I use. It sits flat at about 3 inches off the ground, and cranks up high enuf there's 4 inches under both tires. I got it at an automotive shop for $50.

I have been thinking about getting one of these, but I have not pulled the trigger, yet. So far, I'm using the Pit Bulls & stuff that I have lying around.

Do you know the name/brand?

HF tools has one for around $100, but $50 sounds even better.

Yeah, mine is a MasterCraft, a Canadian Tire house brand. Not sure who makes it for them tho.

The DRC HC2 stand will fit under the WR-250R, even with the suspension lowered from stock and a Flatland Racing skidplate on the bike.
I have one and use it all the time on both of my Yamaha WRs.
In fact, I just rolled into the garage on the WR-250R and put the bike up on the stand to lube the chain. :)

I've been using this, on 4 different centerstand-free bikes, for about 10 years:
http://www.pit-bull.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PBMSA&Product_Code=F0028-000&Category_Code=rear_stands

Nice if you have multiple bikes because it can lift by the swing arm or spools, and is width adjustable.
But on it's own it's only good for lifting the rear, so I'll probably look around for a 'center' bike stand as I now finally have a light bike with a flat-bottom-frame. Buying a bike stand... 93746 I did have a 1981 Yamaha IT125, but a milkcrate was easy for that one.

Way-back flashback: I bought that IT125 new in 1984 for C$1,200, sold it in 1986. I went 24 years between Yamahas. Buying a bike stand... Icon_scratch

I use a Motorsports Lift Stand that cost me $99 but can be found on line for cheaper. Best $99 I spent on the bike! Makes servicing and parking extremely easy in my garage; it just slides right under and step on the lever. The stand lifts the wheels off the ground about 2 inches front and back. But I still have to take the bike off the stand to drain the engine oil.

I have the Harbor Freight one too. Got it for about $17 on sale, cant beat that.

I would, however, strongly recommend that you use the locking pin with it when it is in the raised position.

I found it is easier to put the bike on the stand from the left side as I can rock the bike onto the side stand to get the room to slip the lift under it.

I hope this helps.

A friend of mine mounted a piece of plywood on the base to make it more stable. I haven;t had an issue so far as is.

Crap!

I bought this one for about $90 from Motorcycle Superstore:

I like the looks of what you bought better. The raising might take longer and be a bit of a pain, but the locking casters and the increased height appeal to me.

We find it very handy. Raise it just a tad to level the bike, or raise it way on up.

I also picked up the Motorsport Products P-12 stand: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/productDetail.do?navType=type&webTypeId=96&navTitle=Tools%2FShop&webCatId=22&prodFamilyId=11012. Thus far I'm pretty happy with it. It does exactly what I wanted without much hassle, it's easy to adjust and easy to operate.

The only gripe I have isn't really stand-related. My WRR is butt-heavy. If I put the stand flat under the bike and lift it, usually the rear wheel is still on the ground. I think the problem may be the skid plate screws underneath, giving the bike an unnecessary pivot point of sorts. So, I've been using an extra piece of wood between the bike and the stand to force it to tilt one way or the other. Not sure I can ever get a both-wheels-off-the-ground thing to happen. Anyone else have this issue?

Just a warning about the HF stand.

I folded mine like a taco. HF replaced it but it was fun catching the bike when it happened.
I strongly recommend adding a washer to take up the slack on the linkage. Also tighten everything so there is barely enough play in the linkage and ALWAYS use the lock pin.

My pedal failed while I was lifting the bike. I think it was because of the play in the linkage that allowed the pedal to wander under load allowing my tree stump leg to bend the lever arm like it was made of cheese.

YMMV, I shimmed up the replacement and have been using it, no problems so far.
