Help please

So I bought an air filter from the dealer, yamaha factory one for the R2. In the shop/service manual it states to oil the filter but the one I bought came in a plastic bag inside of a box. It felt oiled and seemed good.

Does anyone have any input as to whether they come oiled well enough or is just enough for shelf life etc.?

I was not going to put any extra oil on it but now I am wondering.

Typically, Yamaha replacement foam air filters come with some plain ol' motor oil on them.
This is, in my opinon, done as some sort of a last-ditch fail-safe effort in case the guy installing it forgets (or doesn't realize) the foam needs to be oiled in order for the filter to stop incoming dirt.

Myself, I'd clean all of that oil out of the filter, dry it nicely, and oil it with a real foam filter oil.
My pick is Maxima FFT.
The reason for that is because a real foam filter oil is much better at staying put and stopping dirt.

Don't forget:
The filter has to be oiled to work, or else the dirt will pass through it and into your engine.
Also, service it regularly, even if you think it ain't too dirty - the oil on the foam will eventually start to get contaminated, thinned-out, and lose effectiveness.

YZ, what do you use to clean the FFT oiled filter? just some soap and water or something more?

Don't waste your time with soap and water, at least not at first, because you'll be there for 6 months trying to get it off.
There are other brands of filter oil that are advertized as being soap-and-water cleanable, but, they're made out of some kind of veggie or plant oils that, basically, are easier to remove from the foam because they don't stay put as well and aren't as sticky.
There's no free lunch.

FFT needs something that will cut through the oil, so you need some kind of petrolium solvent or equivalent.
After the initial cleaning with solvent, then you can do a second cleaning with soap and water.
Make sure you dry all of the water out of the foam after rinsing it out.

Back in the day, everybody I knew used gasoline.
It cut through the oil well and was so readily available (the bikes ran on it).
However, in these liability-conscious times, the popular trend has gotten away from recommending gasoline.
Some guys also say they've had filters fall apart at the seams from gasoline, but that wasn't a problem for me.

The safest way is one of the ready-made foam filter cleaners made by Maxima, Spectro, etc.
These cleaners cut through the oil and then rinse off with water.
Just make sure you completely dry all of the water out, then reoil the filter and squeeze out the excess oil.

cool thanks for the info .. i have some No Toil foam filter cleaner .. have you ever tried this with FFT (im planning to try FFT so i want to make sure i have a good cleaner)

No Toil cleaner is for No Toil filter oil, so I hear.
No Toil isn't a petrolium oil, so I wouldn't expect their cleaner to do a good job on FFT.
