Rear axle blocks Empty
PostSubject: Rear axle blocks   Rear axle blocks EmptyMon May 23, 2011 11:49 pm

FYI--still in work but I'm checking my rear wheel alignment block markings. Rode with a friend this weekend and he stopped me to check rear wheel alignment--said it looked slightly out of alignment. I had recently adjusted the chain and was sure the block markings were correct and he looked and confirmed it.

He followed me for the rest of the ride and again told me it looked odd. So today I measured swing arm bolt centerline to rear axle center line and found that using the factory marks puts one side nearly 3\8" more to the rear! Remeasured several times and got the same results.

Next step is to get one of the MotionPro chain alignment jigs to further check it out--right now I'm just trying to figure this out.

It's very ironic that you just posted this. I was riding home on Saturday and it felt like the bike was riding staggered. I looked at the marks on the blocks and they were both perfect. Then I swapped to my X wheels and aligned the wheel again using the marks on the swingarm. The chain looked completely crooked on the rear sprocket. So I aligned the the chain by eyeballing it and measured. I was almost spot on doing it that way. I checked the marks and it was about a line and a half difference on the axle blocks. Conclusion: Those marks aren't even close and I'm also ordering the motion pro alignment tool.

I think somebody else here questioned those marks.

They said one block has one more line on it than the other. GAHHHH

There was a question as to whether we're supposed to count the adjustment lines from the front of the blocks to axle, or from the rear of the blocks to axle.

After I finished this coffee I'm off to the garage with my tape. Can't believe this is true as I would think it would be a much talked about Yamaha fuck up! Would even distance from the swing arm bolt on both sides necessarily mean the chain was parallel with the sprockets ?

This has always been the case with every motorcycle I have ever owned. You CANNOT adjust by only using the marks. They are NOT accurate. You might get it close but with only a 1/4 turn throwing things off you're better off measuring it yourself.

I've always had good luck running a tape and then using a chain alignment tool.

That's definitely apparent now. I spent years with a VFR that had a SSSA and never had to worry about chain alignment. Now I'm remembering what a pain in the ass it really is.

I don't ever trust those marks on any bike and ignore that they are even there.

That's probably a good idea. I got it pretty close just eyeballing it. If I used the marks it wasn't even close.

Well I'm a happy lad. Just measured swing are bolt to rear axel. Exactly the same on both side. Of course that doesn't mean my chain and sprockets are perfectly aligned, but at least they pretty close. Perhaps there is a difference between bikes or between years. Mine is a 2010 x.

I will say that the marks on my SME axle sliders are MUCH closer than the stock ones but they're still off.

It's probably worth clamping a straight edge to the rear sprocket to see if it aligns with the chain

Confirmed on my X - there are a different number of marks on the axle blocks from the sprocket side to brake side.

I count lines from back of block (farthest from motor) forward and it seems to line up that way.

When sighting down chain towards countershaft sprocket things look just dandy that way too.

i usually just use a Vernier Caliper and use the end of it to measure from the end of the swing arm to the edge of the axle block.

get this close on both sides and ride, usually i eyeball it to.

you can also measure the length of the axle blocks, and if they are different just difference it from your swing arm to axle block measurement.

i have never had it out of alignment doing this, then again i have never ridden a bike where it is out of alignment. so maybee i have had it out of alignment and just cant notice.

either way I find it easier this way and dont have to rely on the axle block marks, which on my cbr were no where near close.

A simple solution (and the only one I ever used because in the 'olden days' there were no blocks - some had axle cams that were accurate) and so I was taught to do it that way, is to hold the bottom of the chain tight (upwards - thereby applying tension the top of it) and use a flashlight to sight down the chain.

Look closely straight down the inside of one side of the links.

Train your eye to a slight offset and you will see the difference visually.

It can be done without a flashlight, but in the garage it helps the sighting.

After tightening, do it (sight down the length of the chain in the same manner) again to ensure nothing changed.

Practice the technique a few times it works.

Got a link? I've never seen those at HF.

HF website is horrible. I just found one in there walking around - they also sell swingarm spools for like $2 which I never knew...

I have another one from Motion Pro that sells for ~$15

I know about the motion pro one. I have a HF not to far from me. Maybe I'll take a ride over there and check it out.
