Hey all,
Just bought a pre-owned 250x. My first dirt type bike. I plan on doing the maintenance on it (what little of it there is), and have a question on the clutch engagement. The bike is a 2009 with 2800 miles. The guy I bought it from seemed to take really good care of it. But the clutch transfers power right at the very very end of travel (away from the grip). I went to adjust the free play and found that the lever was at full tightness. No play at all!
So, could running the clutch at no free play damage the friction plates for the clutch? I loosened it up and rode it, but I am not sure if that fixed the issue or if I am just getting used to it. Ideally I would like the clutch to transfer somewhere closer to the center of travel on the lever. Now if I wanted to adjust that engage point, would I need to change the 5 springs in the clutch basket? I have never wrenched on a bike before. And can't seem to find the info. Other than not being able to shift gears (an obvious problem), should I be looking for some other performance indicator of abnormal wear?
Since this is my first post, I just wanted to say thanks to all the members here on the forum. I have been lurking for a couple weeks now. And I have found some great info and kick ass ideas to spend more money on.
The guy I bought the bike from did the following to it:
Full FMF header and exhaust
FMF EFI controller
HID headlight conversion
Tail tidy
Smoked front and rear turn signals with carbon fiber look housings
Took the stock mirrors off (but I want to add those bar end mirrors you can mount underside style)
And some stickers (but I think they look cool). Cause they compliment the bike.
And before I start getting hit with "where's the pics" posts. I just got it last Sunday night, and I have been working every night since then. I will post em when I get a day off. Like next Thurs. Of course, I have to take them first.
So what do you guys think about the clutch? Should I be concerned? Or just ride it til the thing explodes.
Thanks,
Chris
