I have a few noob questions (go easy on me).

How often should I change the oil? I put around 450 miles a month on my bike and I don't ride too hard. I didn't get the ktm exc (which I really wanted) because of the maintenance intervals.

Can I use regular oil found at auto parts stores? A quart at the motorcycle shop costs $7-$15!!

And here's a REAL noob question... On this bike, do the tranny and the engine share the same oil? Shog

Like I said, go easy on me. Very happy Thanks in advance for any replies! Very cool forum you guys got here!

You can easily go 3000 miles on oil. Assuming you don't buy crap oil.

Owners manual says filter change at 6000 miles, but I change filter with oil no matter what.

You R/X (whatever you have) only holds 1.6 quarts of oil. It is shared by transmission.

Buy quality motorcycle oil. Don't go cheap-o on oil. Even the most expensive oil is pretty inexpensive when you only need 1.6 quarts.

Change it as often as you like, but you can go to 3000 without worry.

Anything else?
Very happy

By the way, read the stickies and stuff here.

All your questions might be answered without you having to ask them.

Some members here buy Rotella oil from wal-mart.

I hate wal-mart with a passion but perhaps someone here can help you out with the price thing and tell you about Rotella?

On the oil line, anyone reading this ever spring for a Blackstone Labs analysis of their engine oil?

So far, I've just been buying whichever oil is cheapest at the motorcycle shop. I had heard though that some people do buy regular automotive oil for their bikes and I wanted to know what kind to get so I don't mess anything up.

You don't want oil that has the round "energy conserving" logo on the bottle because it can have slippery things your motorcycle clutch won't like.
Car oils can have that.

Not only do you have to change the oil every so often, but you should not forget about the air filter, either.
Easy to do since it's hidden away in a box out of view.
