My stupid little piss-ant state has most recently done some cool, but controversial things.

Within the last 24 hours the Governor has signed a "civil unions" law to go into effect January 1, 2012.

AND

A medical marijuana bill has passed through the Senate.

I'm relatively proud....at least we are moving in the appropriate direction.

Lived in Delaware for two years--best kept secret on the east coast! I loved the place--well the riding sucked but otherwise--best place to live on the east coast as far as I'm concerned and I grew up in Va. Kind of neat to leave DC and be in a farming community with a beach in an hour or so! If you just stay at home during the races and avoid the beach during 3 day weekends it was excellent and no sales tax as I recall.

It's relatively shocking. In a good way from my perspective.

What's sad is reading the responses from people that get posted on the newspapers website.

There are some really REALLY nasty and ignorant people living in my state.

I'd like to see marijuana decriminalized for all people, not just for medical use - but at least it's a step in the right direction.

Tree huggers fall into this category too.

Nice of you to say that and all, but I think this place is a shit-hole of epic proportions.

New Castle County is highly over-populated, over-paved, and over-polluted.

Cancer statistics are probably conveniently fudged to keep us from residents from flipping out, but I can't help but think this area is highly risky to live in from a health standpoint.

The education system is crumbling.

I kick myself for not leaving this area when I had a better chance.
I look forward to hopefully being able to retire some place farther south.

There is no sales tax - but there is a higher level of state income tax we pay to make up for it.

Delaware sucks. Don't kid yourself.

Quote :
Gov. Jack Markell signed legislation today authorizing marijuana growing, distribution and use for limited medical purposes.

The General Assembly sent Markell the legislation on Wednesday.

The governor signed the bill this morning without the usual signing ceremony in order to initiate a one-year regulatory and licensing process for three not-for-profit dispensaries that will be authorized to sell marijuana to qualified patients.

Under Senate Bill 17, physicians could recommend marijuana for patients suffering from cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s disease and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Qualified patients who get a doctors recommendation and a state-issued identification card will be able to purchase up to 6 ounces of marijuana at one of the dispensaries.

“We made clear that this would need to be very limited in scope and actively targeted to only Delawareans with profound and chronic illness like cancer and ALS. It is. This bill needed to be about giving targeted help to the most sick in a way that made medical sense, and it is,” Markell said in a written statement.

cheers
