Valve How-To

Subject: Valve How-To Sat May 07, 2011 10:12 am

Just checking to see if anybody has a step-by-step (baby steps, hopefully) how-to on valve check and adjustment? I found HF's in his big bore write-up and I have the online manual, but coming from an XT225 and DR650 this WRR has me spooked. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

I haven't checked my WR-250R or WR-250X, but the proceedure for simply checking them is the same as any other bike when you get right down to it.
Just wash the bike squeaky-clean before you remove the valve cover. :)

Yes, I think I can swing the check; it's the adjustment.....that business with the cam chain seems tricky. Thanks.

Well, the kid behind the counter at the dealership showed me a box with trays of shims, said they'd be glad to swap out once I know what I need....

Im getting ready to do the check myself, i'll try to take pics along the way. Almost did it yesterday but I had a full tank and that was a pita to deal.with. maybe tomorrow.

I did a valve check on mine a few years ago. It was very easy to access the valves and get your feeler gauges in there. My clearances were good so I did not have to worry about shims.

Well, I took off the valve cover to sneak a peak and the valves were in spec. Intake .006", Exhaust .009". Whew.

I did my check as well, but mine were tighter at .005 and .008. budah

The check is relatively simple to do at least. Remove the seat and front plastics, remove the fuel tank, undo the radiator so its only supported by the hoses (don't have to drain or remove, just make it loose), loosen your clutch and throttle cables from the handlebars so you can slide them out of the way, pull the air hose off the valve cover, remove the spark plug and coil, and undo the two bolts for the valve cover. Should come off rather easily, then just wiggle it out of through the radiator side of the frame. Pull the timing plugs, set to TDC (cams lobes facing out with all four lines lined up), and measure with your feeler gauge. Took me about 2 hours taking my sweet time doing it.

Man that's going to make me miss my CBR125R... except for the fact that it has to be done a lot more frequently on the old bike thumb
