On Sunday I meet several friends for a ride towards Sequoia National park. I was on the WR250 and two were on KLR650's. My other friend was on his BMW1200 GS.
It was described as pavement to a specific turn off then dirt/fire roads for approx 60 miles in a loop along the upper Kings River.
It was going fine until we hit the so called fire road. It was very rutted and rocky. A lot of pretty deep dips and wash out areas. All the bikes did fine except the BMW.
My friend went down twice at pretty low speed but the second time he hurt his ankle. He hit a deep muddy groove and lost it due to lack of traction and a very heavy bike.
We got him back to the main road and he rode home. He later found out the ankle was broken. He said its a minor break (if there is such a thing). No damage to his bike.
Anyway, we retraced our path and continued the ride. I am more impressed than ever on how capable the WR is. It handled everything great. It inspires confidence and is so easy to control compared to my KLR. The other guys on their KLR's did fine but they are better off road riders than I am.
The switch from the KLR to the WR was the right choice for me.
UPDATE.... Its not my fault..But I still feel terrible. My buddy went to a ortho doc and had more x-rays. It turns out the ankle is broken in two places and he will need surgery after all.
I still like the WR
