Spare parts on the road Empty
PostSubject: Spare parts on the road   Spare parts on the road EmptyTue Aug 16, 2011 7:25 pm

I trailer my 250R in a small enclosed trailer to some remote places and have some room for spare parts and tools. Most of my riding is off road, taking cameras to places I can't get to with a camper. Not "nasty" terrain (yet) but plenty of dirt, mud & rocky stuff. (I live in New Mexico where pavement is a pretty new concept) wink

What would you take? Parts? Tools?

(Pics to follow. I'm still in my 7 day new member probation) :nono:

Yeah I don't get that thing. I looked and couldn't find where that probation stipulation is. Spare parts on the road 490865

If I can fix a flat, lube and adjust the chain I'm good to go for local riding thumb
I've thought about carrying my set of light weight jumper cables but I think just replacing the battery every 30 or so months will do the trick.
The bike is really bullet proof and needs little.

i would have my basic carry with me kit, but for a trailer stash, depends how long and how far your going. i'd start with extra spare tubes, more comprehensive tool kit, larger tyre levers maybe, bigger pump/12v compressor, possibly a tyre changing rig if there is room and spare tie downs (when u dont have them, you'll need them). any largish distance from home i'd prob swing in a spare tyre, wheel bearing/seal kit, brake pads. none of thats stuff that'll go quickly, but if your travelling around miles from home, saves trying to find a shop.

If I was exclusively out riding it like a dirt bike, keep a set of spare lever and pedals, maybe a spare fuel pump if its an 08, a spare plug, and stuff to do an oil change or three in case it gets drowned in addition to the tire change kit. Maybe a spare set of bars? Oh and duct tape and zip ties.

If I'm hauling in a trailer, I have room for a small Craftsman toolbox that holds a complete set of wrenches, 3/8 & 1/4 sockets, torque wrenches, etc. It's only something like 12"x24" or something like that, and you have a trailer. There'd be an oil change, chain lube, and a few spare and pre-oiled air filters in there as well. Along with a spare tube, front and back - you're going to have to replace your tubes at some point in the future anyways, so might as well have them beforehand and available as spares.

On the bike is always the front fender bag with three Motion Pro irons/axle wrenches, the Motion Pro drive converter, a bead buddy, spare 21" tube along with zipties, spare plug, spare master link, 4 & 5mm Allan keys, couple of sockets, and quick set JB Weld. Little tube of Lock-tite, small little bottle of Windex, and a flat little package of talc powder. Two small vice grips, one needle nose, one blunt nose stashed in the edges of the tank bag. Small roll of gun tape. Little ziplock of spare fuses in the lid of the tank bag. I've been thinking that a spare shifter zip-tied somewhere out of the way might not be a bad idea as well.

Anything that requires more than that is probably going to be outside my expertise/knowledge to fix, and it will be time to press the "Help" button on my SPOT...

Heck, if I had an enclosed trailer I would bring everything I have in the gagarge that I use to work on the bike. Even the lift to pick it up and get both wheels off the ground.

If I was set up to change tires well...I'ld want the coolest collection of tires to pick from by whim.
...and, maybe, my stock pipe to put back on...In case I wanted to avoid some noise conflicts.
