PostSubject: 12/47 or 13/50   12/47 or 13/50 EmptySun Oct 16, 2011 11:49 am

Hi All. I dropped to a 12T counter sprocket cuz the low end torque is weaker plus in mixed single and double track, I find myself stuck in high first or lugging second. The current 12/43 (3.6) is fine for the 200+km mixed hwy/dirt road trips I do. I get out in the dirt every weekend or two but I also like to ride to work - 40km/25mi round trip. For the dirt, I'd like to tighten up the ratio some more to make it easier to wheelie over water bars and stuff as well as being able to ride more in 2nd and 3rd. For this, I was thinking of switching to 12/47 (3.9) or 13/50 (3.85). The combo's might be a bit low for highway???? Easy enuf to bump up a tooth on the front for longer road trips. Has anyone tried these ratios? Will a 14/50 (3.6) even work? Thanx

For almost the entire 7,000 miles I rode a WR-250R, I used 12/47 sprockets without any kind of trouble.
Much better for trail riding, and I also felt it was just fine and dandy on the street, too.
Top speed was still around 80mph.
Cruising at 65-70mph felt just fine to me.

I'm running 14/49, I believe some other folks are running 14/50, scroll down a few threads.

I've been riding 12 / 48 for month now and I like it. 55-60 mph is fine, top speed is about 74. I spend more time in 2nd and 3rd on the trails.

I have 13/48 gearing on my WRR right now (also switched to an MT43 from stock tire which kind of offset my gear change) and 2nd still feels to high so I am probably going to bump up to a 13/50 eventually. As far as highway speeds go, not sure. I got it up to around 60-65mph (gps indicated) w/o any problems and could probably still go a lot faster. I have not tested top speed yet because I also installed the Tubliss system and my rear wheel is seriously out of balance so I don't go much faster than 50mph right now. BTW, I think I am going to have to strap a boat anchor to a spoke to get the wheel balanced...

I know others out there have tried 13/50 with success, but in my experience the 50t rear doesn't leave much clearance for the chain and the chain guide. My chain guide was was a hair bent and it cause the chain to spit out masterlink clips left and right. I'd go 12/47. 49t is the biggest I would go on the rear.

Right now, I'm running 13/49 and its still can cruise at 70 with power to pass. Going to 12/47 the next go around.

Good point. When I put the 48 on there with a 112 link chain it really looked like it was getting pretty close to the chain guide and I was wondering about clearance on a bigger sprocket. How about a 13/50 w/ 114 link chain?
