PCV Acceleration Testing Empty
PostSubject: PCV Acceleration Testing   PCV Acceleration Testing EmptyTue Oct 04, 2011 1:54 am

I ran some tests tonight with a PCV on a WR250R.

I made every effort to keep conditions as consistent as possible. Same bike, same stretch of road in the same direction, same technique, no notable wind, only 40 minutes elapsed from beginning to end of these tests.

Bike is completely stock with all systems in place (AIS, EXUP, etc) - just the PCV. I would roll out, dial up 3rd gear, and at 15mph I would crack the throttle wide open and hold it to the limiter. The data was collected by a 10Hz Driftbox from Racelogic, and the 20-60MPH times were interpolated and extracted by the software.

I know these are terrible numbers for 20-60, I wasn't trying to generate fast numbers, just eliminating as many variables as possible (no shifting).

PCV with ZERO map (stock)
RUN 1 - 7.43
RUN 2 - 7.36
RUN 3 - 7.08 (!!)
Average - 7.29

PCV with stock exhaust, stock airbox map
RUN 1 - 7.18
RUN 2 - 7.15
RUN 3 - 7.29
Average - 7.21

PCV with stock exhaust, open airbox map - held the airbox door open with my leg for these runs
RUN 1 - 6.65
RUN 2 - 6.69
RUN 3 - 6.58
Average - 6.64

My thoughts:
I don't know where that 7.08 came from in the zero map set, but it happened...that brought the average of the zero map pretty close to the average of the stock air/stock exhaust map.

The stock air/stock exhaust map actually pulled a little harder than the open airbox setup way down in the RPM range, but the open airbox came back with a vengeance once the revs built up.

Comparing just the median number, 7.36 to 7.18 to 6.65 shows a nice incremental improvement as you add the map and then open the airbox.

Had the median runs started side by side at 20MPH, at the time the airbox bike hit 60MPH, it would have been 8.45 feet ahead of the stock air/stock exhaust map bike, and 22.89 feet ahead of the zero map bike. (Obviously the stock air/stock exhaust bike would have been 14.44 feet ahead of the zero map bike)...

This goes back to what others have already said...this engine is suffocating. Letting her breathe showed a nice improvement. I don't have an exhaust so as much as I wanted, I couldn't open her up end to end and collect that 4th set of numbers.. :/

FWIW, here's a graph with the three median runs:

So ummmm..........why exactly would you purchase a PCV if your operating a completely stock motorcycle?

Just curious.

And yes - removing the airbox door provides the biggest performance improvement I've felt to date.

Can't afford to do it all at once. I'm sure a bunch of guys opened airbox and swapped or drilled the pipe without adding fuel. I wasn't interested in adding any more air to my already lean bike until I could give it more fuel.

The bottom line is this is concrete data that PCV + airbox mod alone results in a nearly 10% quicker run through the 3rd gear powerband.

Maybe opening the airbox alone without the PCV would give the same 10%...someone with a full stock setup would have to test that, not me...

Good stuff! You are doing it right, if you can't afford it all at once, programmer first.

I always see people asking about what kind of difference the airbox opens makes, and what differences from just the programmer. This give a more objective, concrete observation than just "it feels faster." Once you get a pipe, you can do the same.

Look and see what the temps and humidity were so you can do a follow up with a pipe at a later date ;)

Great idea...Quoting this here for future reference (because this is where I'll look in the future...)

62F, 30.22 baro, 59% humidity, 46F dewpt.

My PCV arrived today. Install took about 30 minutes from first turn of a wrench to the last bolt snugged in place. Very simple.

Once I got the software transferred over to my netbook I got the PCV plugged in and loaded the stock exhaust/filter map. Took it for a short test ride and didn't feel much of a difference. Had I done a back to back (stock to PCV) run I might have felt a difference, but it would be minimal.

Disappointed with the results of that map I went back home and opened the toolbox again. Once the airbox door was removed I loaded up the stock exhaust/open airbox map. Now we're talking! Nice power boost, but HOLY CRAP is that intake noise loud now... I always wore earplugs when riding (wind noise damages hearing after long term exposure), but damn; I may need to find some better ones!

I'm going to keep it this way until I can afford the exhaust. The intake noise acts like a loud exhaust for alerting cagers to my presence. Just crack that throttle open and it roars!

I found a parking lot that was excellent for practicing my backing-it-in skills. I blasted around there for an hour or more. The power increase is awesome. Power wheelies are considerably easier in first gear now.
