REPRODUCED FROM THAT OTHER FORUMS MEGATHREAD. Theres so many post, you get bumped to the bottom pretty quick, and most people are talking luggage currently.

Just got back from a long trip and I have 20,000 mile on my WRR. Theres a loud clacking sound coming from the engine after starting it up for the first 3 seconds or so and then it stops. When I rev the engine theres this delayed clacking after chopping the throttle — similar to a chain slap.

What do think? Stretched cam chain? Maybe the cam chain damper needs replacing or the cam chain tension is worn?

I'll be tearing the bike down anyway to change coolant, grease bearings, send in suspension, check valves, etc. This will just be another thing i need to do.

Sounds like what ZED's WRX was doing. It progressed from noisy on startup (until oil-pressure built up dunno ) to clackety all the time. A friend who knows motorcycle engines up/down & sideways diagnosed it in about 20 seconds. I think the OEM cam chain was about $35 & the replacement took an hour or two - not difficult. Make sure you read through the procedures for dealing with the tensioner, that was the hardest part.

This occurred at 17,000km. Seems pretty early in the bike's life, but we *do* beat on our little 250's fairly hard. The bike's been doing great since the cam chain replacement.

We hung the old & the new off of a screwdriver shaft to compare them, and the old chain was visibly stretched by about a link, as well as stiff and kinked.

That is exactly what is happening. 3 seconds really loud clack and then stops... Thats been happening ever since 10,000 miles, but now that I have 20,000 I can hear the loose cam chain as well.

Is there any other parts to get besides the chain, like the plastic dampers, etc.

yup, looking at a parts diagram on the yamaha web site there are 3 guides and a tensioner plus a few little items. if i were to do or sell the job i would also replace the gears too...but that is me, an old autoparts man and a little bit compulsive about my own repairs.

hope you quite that thing down, gotta wonder about the maint sched when the cam chain needs replacement at 10-20K mi and valve adjustment at 24K mi

We didn't replace anything but the chain. Time will tell if that was a good choice or not...

If his bike needs a new chain again in a similar mileage frame, especially if mine has not, it *will* get a whole whack of new parts.

Another question, I'd like to pose. How does one know if the cam chain tensioner is not operating correctly? Pretty much ordered everything except that part.
