so what's the deal w/ studs - can you really just use a pile of sheet metal screws (as I've heard of before but have my doubts); or is it a more expensive proposition? Would love to try it out!

The guys around here use sheet metal screws and they work just fine. thumb

I used to make studded tires for my mountain bike using sheet metal screws. It was a lot of work and they weighed a lot more when you were done. It made for quite the workout to push the bike around with them. I found they had a tendency over time to pry themselves out. I expect that would happen even faster with a motorcycle. But, they should hook up well while they last. thumb

If you are going to stud up beavis I would suggest using "Original Gold Screws" you will be alot happier and will stick like glue. I put almost 1100 screws between front and rear. Also rode a little over 800 mi on the ice this year
