Hey Guys,

I changed the oil for the first time today and I think I stripped the drain bolt hole. What is the fix for this? Does the hole need to be tapped? Can a mechanic at a dealership do this(easily)? I need to try and get it fixed within the next week if possible. I posted this on the ADVrider site also. Thanks.

How bad did you strip it? Is it just cross threaded, or did you crank down on it until it just spins around and never tightens? Is there any aluminum in the threads of the bolt? In other words, did the threads in the motor come out on the bolt? If you cross threaded it and didn't totally strip it out, you "might" get lucky and be able to run a tap through the hole and clean up the threads. Then install a new drain bolt and new crush washer. Oh ya, and use a torque wrench this time! If the threads are totally stripped out of the motor, installing a Heli-Coil or similar thread repair insert is an option. But if it were me, I would tap the hole and go with a larger drain plug.

It just spins around and never tightens. The threads in the motor came out in the bolt. I was using a torque wrench, it started spinning before it got to the correct torque. Thanks for the reply. I will contact the dealer as soon as they open on Tues. to see if they can tap it for me.

So if this was the first oil change, the bolt has never been out before, right?. Did it come out smooth, or was it hard coming out? If it did come out hard and had threads on it, then I would say that is a Yamaha warranty claim, since you never had it out before. If it came out easy, then you shouldn't have stripped it using a torque wrench to only 14 ft/lbs when you put it back in. Better get your wrench checked.

Different but similar to what mwakey is saying, ... I just removed the muffler tip from my bike today just to check carbon buildup and hear what it would sound like without the sparky in there. Well, first two bolts came out sweet and easy but the third (lower left) actually turned normally at first but then tightened up and snapped off without really putting much juice to it. I even reversed direction (tightening) after I felt it binding thinking that maybe there was some carbon in the threads and a change of direction would clean it out.

No way to know for sure since I bought the bike used but I would guess that this one bolt was cross threaded on original installation. There was no evidence that this piece had ever been removed before.

Since I've hyjacked this oil drain bolt thread into broken muffler cap bolts already, I might as well add that the pipe sounds too loud without the sparky in there.

Hey Capt., you might get by just leaving it alone and reinstalling the bolts that didn't break off. Use some loctite on them and I would think it would be fine. Your spark arrestor isn't as critical as an oil drain bolt. Two bolts should hold it ok. If it vibrates with just two then you might have to consider getting the broken bolt out. Drill a hole through the center of the broken bolt and use an Easy Out extractor to get the broken piece out, then run a tap through the hole and see if you can clean up the threads.

Thanks pal. Well, you're my neighbor to the south so you're probably in this tropical snot weather too. I didn't get to test run the bike without the sparky before the skies opened up again. I just put the cap back on with the two good bolts and closed up the bike shed. I'm sure that with the proper application of violence that I can extract the remains of the offending bolt.

I want to ride my overly loud little beast without the sparky to see if I can detect any change in performance since I have the PCIII that is set to it's base settings as I bought the bike recently with it installed this way. I don't know very much about the chip yet to go changing it's settings without learning more.

I'd love a lighter spark arrested aftermarkket pipe that doesn't need to be repacked. I sure hope they make one for us eventually. Once again my opologies for the hyjack. My problem is nothing where as a stripped oil drain bolt shuts you down.

I like your attitude. Who said violence never solved anything?

Good luck finding a day to ride. I think it's rainy season for us from here on out.

Rain. Nice!
Bloody well snowed her yesterday and this morning. GAHHHH

OK, hijack over.

I haven't looked in the drain hole or seen a WR case apart (thankfully) so I can't say, but there may be enough material surrounding the drain to carefully helicoil or drill and tap for the next size bolt. We recently had one of the KLR engines apart and there was lots of material, but again, I don't know with the WR.

I would also definitely try the dealer and the warranty route first though. They may say that you stripped it by over-torquing it, so who knows what will come of that.

Torque wrenches can be funny things. I once handed one of mine to a friend so he could torque the cover plate on his automatic transmission. After he snapped two bolts I did a quick sanity check against my own 'feel' and it was definitely out. I finished the rest of them by hand and drilled and tapped the broken ones for oversize. All was still good when he sold the vehicle a couple of years later, but I can tell you that torque wrench got replace as soon as I needed it again. Meanwhile, I've got other torque wrenches that are still good and quite accurate years later. If you don't check them, they could be off.

Good luck!

Well, the problem with the drain bolt has been solved. Took it to the dealer yesterday, they fixed it with a heli-coil, and then I picked it up today. I gladly paid $132 to have it fixed before my trip next weekend. No warranty issue, I am sure it was my fault. Now I just need to sort out a torque wrench problem. Thanks again for the help.
