Alternator Help Empty
PostSubject: Alternator Help   Alternator Help EmptyThu May 31, 2012 5:01 am

I am the currently on the University of Auckland (New Zealand) formula SAE team. Each year we build a open wheel single seater race car, to race in the Australian Forumala SAE Competition. Over the last couple of years we have been developing a custom engine package using 2 wr250 heads and making a v twin. We are almost ready to dyno run the second version of our engine but are scared that the r6 generator we were planning to use will be too much for the 250 crank as it needs to be a long way from the main bearings to clear the starting gear.

I have been looking for alternatives and the wrr/x alternator seems to be as powerful as the r6 generator but in a lot smaller package.

Would anyone be able to measure the outside diameter of the alternator for me? As long as the diameter is less than 105 mm it should fit with the Wr450 starting gear we are using. Even if someone could measure the outside diameter of the casing I could work out the size of the rotor assembly using the workshop manual.

Link to the engine build on facebook:

Thanks Lachlan

Alternator Help Stator10

it's in inches but I hope it helps
looks like the outer case is close to 4.5 inches
if the 4.1 inches for 105mm i came up with is correct, i'd say it will be close

I spent 5 years with the Kettering University (used to be General Motors Institute) FSAE team. It's a great program and anyone who has the chance to join a team and doesn't is losing out on the best education they'll get at college.

Folks with FSAE on their resume go to the front of the line when I have a job posting. It's hard work and practical experience that is very hard to match.

Sorry I can't measure my stator for you at the moment, but I thought I'd at least chime in to show some respect for the team.

Thanks for you help f3joel. It looks small enough so I have ordered one. It should be here in a couple of weeks. NZ is not the easiest place to get parts.

I would highly recommend joining a FSAE team if you get the chance.
