It's normal threads but super tight from the factory and had red locktite on it.

Add heat, it will help with the locktite.

I cheated and had the Yammy dealer take mine off as part of some other work they had to do - after asking them "how much?" and they went "Those? Free..." I got a few comments when I picked up the bike.

Then I put them back on after doubling another rider out of the boonies for about 30 miles without the buddy pegs. Decided the weight savings were meaningless and they also made pretty nice attachment points for the Giant Loop bag.

I removed mine not for weight savings but because I had some instances in tight gnarly singletrack where my calf hit the passenger peg brackets. I'm not sure how but it was annoying so when I got home I yanked them off and tossed them in the box with all the other OEM stuff I have removed. My wife has her own bike and will never ride on mine so I won't ever need to put them back on.
