http://www.woodsracer.com/portal/forums/showthread.php?10137-Michelin-AC-10-Winter-Studded-Tires-(long-rally-studs)

If I had these I could ride year round. Granted it would be cold, but I have gear for that. Her really we only get 6-8" down low and there is lots of close riding. Down side is that I have to rip road there and back...would be nice though.

I run a similar setup on my bikes, I use screw in grip studs.
I live very close to a bunch of trails that freeze and the snow gets packed down by sleds and atvs, riding on those trails is a total blast, you have tons of grip when the snows packed down Very happy

Where do you buy them? What brand?
Can you add those to any tire?
I'm running D606 on my R wheels, would they work on those?

I've got no Southern winter rides this season, March or April is a long time to wait for my next ride....

I bought them at gnarly parts, in bc so theres no boarder fees, you can buy direct from gripstuds too tho.
They will work in any tire with deep enough tread, the models I run #1800 in the rear need 14mm of tread min and the front #1740s need 11mm.
Theres a bunch of different model grip studs, the short ones work great on roots, logs and hard packed dirt year round, they're not just for ice.
They're not cheap at a buck a piece but you can remove them when your tire wears out and install em in a new tire.
Heres a pic of the studs and a pic of my studded tires.

I just ordered the Kold Kutter spikes on Ebay.
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Kold-Kutter-Spikes-1000-Stk-1-2-Zoll-1-27cm-lange-Schraubspikes-/261124639061?pt=Rad_Reifenzubeh%C3%B6r&hash=item3ccc3dc955

I'm quite curious how it will work out on the wr250r. Unfortunately I have to drive on tarmac to get to the trails (live in the city centre).

Hi,

I rode my wrr all last winter on ice and snow covered secondary roads here in scenic ne Iowa by simply and cheaply using 100 #10 x1/2 hex headed sheet metal screws in each used Scorpion Pro. They gave excellent traction even in the fluffy stuff. but not so much on the bare pavement. Total cost of the 200 screws was less than $20. It's the cheap way to find out if you like it.

Keeping my hands warm was accomplished by using another inexpensive technology. I got a pair of wrist sweat bands from the golf section at WalWorld and used them to hold two Hot Hands against the my wrists.

I've run the kold kutters before every couple of rides I needed to replace the screws in the center of the rear tire, they work quite well in the front tire tho, but be carefull on pavement they dont bite at all on it, IMO they are for off road use only.
They actually stay in a tire with soft flexible knobs the best, a rear tire with stiff/hard knobs will spit them out in a few miles. A local guy ran screws in a chein shein 755 rear with ok results, the maxxis it was the worse one, they pulled out instantly. I used a pirelli mt18, it work ok they lasted a 100 or so kms, its not as hard as a maxxis it but not as soft as the cs 755 either.
If I didnt ride alot in the winter the grip studs would be a waste of money but I ride as much in the winter as the summer and expect to get a few winters out of my tires.

Great information.
I'll try to get cheap soft tires from Mitas and keep my bike at my friends place which lives next to a lake and will see how the kold kutters work.
Is it ok to unscrew the studs from the tire at the end of winter season and drive with the same tires untilll the end of summer or do the tires wear much faster this way?

The cold kutter and gold screws are for ice racing only. We use the at the races, not on bare ground. The other studs that are posted are for winter trail rideing.

Few tires from moto race http://www.motorace.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=M&Category_Code=SWT A friend of mine use to build them or glue the studs in. Watch the glue is will make you ever so sick.

The ice tires i run are from Fredette http://www.frpoffroad.com/

Winter is a great time to own a dirt bike wings

I've taken screws out of tires then ran them untill they were worn out with out issue before.

dtx is right tho screws are for ice only useally but they're a cheap way to go for a few rides in the winter, just try to stay off the bare ground as much as you can.

If you plan on riding alot in the winter studded tires are worth the extra money, I know a guy thats been running his studded tires for a month now and we have no snow or ice yet, it doesnt hurt the tires at all, screws wouldnt last 1/2 a ride in these conditions lol.

Some guys run tapcon deck screws from the inside out with a locknut on the outside. I have seen them in action and they do work, most race organations dont let you run them.

We run kenda ice tires and remove them every year, never touch anything other than ice !! http://kgmotorcycletires.com/kenda_k335_ice_tire.htm these can be used without a liner with 7/8 inch screws. Ice tires are a dark art and good tires are worth the price.

Most guys i know remove the winter tires each year and run them again next year as you spend enough for them so getting them to last is worth the time of spooning them on and off.

Some picks of the tapcon type tires http://www.nedirtbikes.com/content/m_150696/mpage_1/key_tapcon%2cscrews/tm.htm#150798

I am buying dunlop 606's in the spring, do you guys think the stock wr250r bridgestones have enough tread for me to stud them? My stock ones are hardly worn... what if I used smaller screws?

Thanks

You cant get short enough screws for the stock tires, the treads just not deep enough, plus they suck offroad.
Get a set of used knobbies and put screws in them. Post up on dualsport that you want a used set of knobbies, im sure one of the local fast guys/racers has a used set lieing around they'd sell you cheap.

If you see or feel any bump inside the tire the screws are to long and will rub a hole in the tube after time, if needed use another tube arround the outside of the one that holds air to keep flats away. Most good tires are built with a liner inside,an old street tire works well, to support longer screws. You going to put a lot of stress on them little screws ! They tend to rip the knobs right off the tires. you best bet is a kenda ice tire on the rear.

I think koldcutter sell the liners, but the only fit the kenda k-433 ice tire rear. They do make a front liner for a 21in tire.

Built this one 2 years ago, https://2img.net/h/i869.photobucket.com/albums/ab259/shorttrack915/021110_10091.jpg Run it on the wr250 r/x as i dont have a big hp# so i dont tend to rip out the screws.

I know a few guys that go ice racing as much as they can, it looks like it would be fun for about an hour or so but im not a competitive rider I get bored on a track and prefer trail riding. I have the same issue with mx tracks, after a few laps I want to go some wheres different.

I can go riding right from my house theres alot of atv and sled trails that cross the dirt road I live on. Theres a 40ish km hard/technical loop and a 100+ km easy/open trail loop I can do, not counting a bunch of dead end trails, thats why I run the grip studs not screws, I'll go riding on lakes, theres one a short trail ride from home but I will be slowing down for corners. Living in the sticks does have its perks lol.

It sucks that you cant have good do it all tires in the winter... Ice racing tires get destroyed if you ride on dirt, guys with the pro tires put wraps on them so they never touch anything but ice and studded tires/tires with grip studs dont have enough bite on the lakes to go flat out but can handle riding on dirt and rocks.

I like this topic too lol.

In Lithuania we are still not able to drive on ice as it gets a bit warmer.

Decided to get a rear studded tire of Trelleborg (produced by Mitas) and a front studded tire of Mitas so that I'll be able to drive from home to trails.. Got this set at a local tire shop for around 220 euro a set mounted Very happy
It's a lot of fun driving in winter!
