Subject: Has anyone used not OEM Shims? (Valve pads) Thu Aug 02, 2012 12:33 pm
On one side I was told by a technician that shims are something that's OEM only and I wont find aftermarket and on the other I am being told to not buy OEM shims and just buy a HOTCAMS Shim kit..
Could anyone shed some light on the matter?
Thanks

I have never used them on my WR, but I have used HotCams shims on my other bikes for years and have no complaints. The stock shims are pretty pricey.

Depends on how you are going replace the shims. If you are going to do it like BigDog and shave them down to the thickness you need then any correct diameter (7.48mm)shim will work as long as it is thick enough to start. If you are just going to replace the shims with presized shims to get it in the correct range then a Hotcams shim kit would be an easy way to go, or just go to a well established service dept. of your local shop and they usually have enough leftover shims laying around to find the size your looking for.

i work at a motorcycle shop and we don't use OEM shims, just HotCams...on the down side, buying a whole kit when you only need a few can be expensive... i'm with pfy50, become a groupie at your local shop and get the sizes you need from there...
