Pipe Repack with Moose Cartridge Empty
PostSubject: Pipe Repack with Moose Cartridge   Pipe Repack with Moose Cartridge EmptyFri Dec 03, 2010 10:22 am

I repacked my Q4 a while back; turned out to be pretty easy so I figured I'd post it up in case it might help somebody else.

I've got a couple of helpers happy to be on hand for any job, so we were set to go:

At 15,xxx miles, it was past time for a repack:

I read and read about pipe repacking, finally decided to go with the Moose Competition Repack Cartridge. I went with #1860-0093 for 15" oval pipes; about $26 from Dennis Kirk:

It has to be wrapped tighter than it is in this picture, but you get the idea:

Get it started and just keep at it:

All lined up and ready to put back together:

Got the pipe back on and held my breath, but the bike cranked right up and runs like a top. Sounds nice, too.

Awesome, thanks for the write up. I need to start thinking about this.

What made you go with Moose packing? Aslo, I think FMF has videos to help out as well, but this write up is good too.

I'd never done a repack before and was feeling a little bit of dread. After doing some reading the Moose kit seemed the way to go.

Sarah your Moose kit has been on for a while. Did you notice that sound level. Up? down? Can't tell... Did it make a difference on the original install. The Q4 is supposed to be 96 db but not really according to my iPhone and my friends db meter. Don't want to show up at an AMA event and get rejected.

Yes, the pipe was definitely quietened down with the repack; I can say that without a doubt. To my ear it's as quiet as it ever was, and has a very nice tone. I don't want to steer you wrong though, keep in mind I've had the pipe a good while, so I may have forgotten what it orginally sounded like. I will say that I've been very pleased, and will go the same route next time around.

The packing looked good for 15k miles.

You should try packing a 2 stroke silencer. Much nastier than a thumper.

From now on, I'll consider repacking a breeze. Now I'm worried about the valve check/adjustment.

Here's my Q4 at 7K miles. All wear was at top of muffler. Sides and bottom were perfectly intact.

Anybody with thoughts on "pillow" vs. "pressed" packing? The pillow stuff is pricey, do you get any benefit?

I just repacked my Delta with their Spec 30 loose packing about 2wks ago, so far to excellent results. I've run the bike at high rpms doing canyons, mountains and freeway for about 800mi since and have noticed no loss in performance or increased noise from the muffler. Prior to that repack, I was packing this muffler on average once per month and have gone through a variety of brands and types of packing. Moral of the story: you get what you pay for. Moose Racing packing seems like great stuff despite the additional cost. $10-20 bucks might just save you a ton of headache.

Motokid just posted about a repak with general FMF packing. The same stuff I used.
It went well and easy for me...plus the generic packing left plenty of stuff to pack every last spot.
The pre-packed stuff seems to pak most all of the critical space...tho stuffing every last crack, with generic stuff, felt good, somehow.
And cheaper too...

Anywho. a repack was well worth the cost and effort.
