| I'm just using regular castoroil 10W30 for now, but keeping it changed about every 1,000 miles. I like synthetic but am worried that the clutch may not like it too much. | |

| I try to use synthetics, almost always 5w40 or 10w40 depending on whats available. Rotella T6 Synthetic and Amsoil most often, but Yamalube, Castrol, Valvoline, Motul, Golden Spectro, regular 15w40 Rotella or whatever's new and got the right ratings is better than the old worn crap in the sump when its time for a change. | |

| JASO-MA means it lacks friction modifiers and is safe for use in wet clutch systems. Just look at the bottle. I use Rotella T6 in every toy I own as well. | |

Me too. Rotella 5W-40 synthetic in 8 different bikes, over the last 5 years. No issues. I haven't put any in the WRR yet because the seller gave me enough 2 bottles of Motul for my first change.

| Synthetic oil may be a higher spec. But if you like to change oil regularly...to me , makes it a moot point. I'm not trying to comment on any specific blend or brand...just trying to pick the best material for the job at hand...did I mention price?.... | |

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking ..... heck I drain the oil and it still looks clean, so I just dump it in the lawnmower or something.

| Why do you feel the need to change oil every thousand miles?

I honestly don't know how often I change mine. I lost track of miles when I went from 2 cars to 4 cars and 2 motorcycles a few years ago. Some folks just change it when it seems like it's been a while. I just change the oil when it's no longer a nice honey brown on the backing plate of the site glass. I use amsoil, I tried the rotella and it didn't seem to shift as smooth.

I use amsoil, I tried the rotella and it didn't seem to shift as smooth. I was asking OP actually. I don't pay a ton of attention to miles between changes either. twice a year-ish and/or when shifting gears gets notchy. I know I go much farther than 1000 miles though. That's part of the beauty of owning the Yamaha. Just wondering why somebody would feel the "need" to cut the manufacturer's recommendation into thirds like that. _________________ 2008 WR250X Gearing: 13t - 48t Power Commander 5 / PC-V Airbox Door Removed - Flapper glued - AIS removed FmF Q4 Bridgestone Battlax BT-003rs

| Understood...
I was suggesting that maybe he doesn't watch his mileage too close and just changes it when it feels right.
Some folks only put 100 miles a month on their machine, so once a year is 1200 miles. I personally seem to change mine every 3-4 months regardless of mileage. It just "feels like it's been too long" by then.

| I use this. 10w 40 or 20w 50 depending on how I feel when I'm buying it. If it's designed for four stroke motorcycles, it's designed for using with clutches. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. _________________ 2008 WR250X Gearing: 13t - 48t Power Commander 5 / PC-V Airbox Door Removed - Flapper glued - AIS removed FmF Q4 Bridgestone Battlax BT-003rs

Im running a part synthetic and change it every 1500 miles and oil filter every 3k for a few reasons. 1) i commute daily stop and go on the way in and Hwy on the way home 30 miles a day (have only used my Jeep maybe 5 times in the last year). 2) I ride the freakin piss out of this thing 3) Oil changes are cheap - was on sale for 6.99 per quart 4) Gives me a reason to get the bike up on the stand, drink a beer, wrench a little, and fiddle around out in the yard with the bike. If i ran full synthetic id go 3k in between. Especially if im shelling out the extra cost but for the time being i will continue my normal routine. Heres what i run

| That's the beauty of Shell's Rotella T6. $6 / qt, and full synthetic. I attribute the low cost mostly because it is a huge (sales) volume product used mostly in large capacity engines. Truckers wouldn't pay motorcycle oil prices. | |

| I change my oil around 1500 miles as well. With the T6 it only costs around $6 each oil change. I change the filter every other time. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing. But i also run a K&N with an open airbox. The oil gets quite dirty when i've been trail riding. | |

| I use Amsoil in all my vehicles, and it generally allows me to push my change intervals out to the maximum. I'm just over 2500 miles now since my last oil change on the WRR, and it's still amber in the site glass and shifts smooth (although I am mostly on pavement; minimum 50 miles of pavement to get to 20 miles of dirt, then 50 miles pavement home).
I much prefer riding to maintaining, so if paying double for good oil means it'll go twice as far between changes, I'm game.

Amsoil doesn't allow you longer oil change interval over any competitors oil. It's called marketing, and they can charge the prices they do because people like you actually believe the hype and are willing to pay it. It's simply that simple. Not bashing, just hoping to open eyes.

Ever had oil analysed? I have. 7000 miles on an oil change is realistic. I do it in my truck. The bike uses so little that it's no big deal to me to change it out before a day at the track, or every 3000 miles, whichever comes first.

| keep in mind, the oil has the duty of cleaning your engine as well. I remember a big jug of no name oil, many years ago, that would not get dirty in my old chev. They must have forgot to put detergent in it or something. If you changed it by looks, you'ld be foolin yourself, it just wasnt cleaning stuff the way it should...all that unwanted crap would be left in my engine somewhere, while the oil looked great on the dipstick. I dont desire anything that encourages me to leave that crap in there any longer than i have to, whether the dynamics of the oil have broken down or not. | |
