chain lube

what chain lube do you guys use?

I use my bike as a daily commuter, so riding through all kinds of weather usually requires me to lube my chain every 2 weeks.

the problem I'm having with my current chain lube (from PRESTO), is that it sprays all the gunk, dirt and the lube itself everywhere. critical areas are the rim, which is always covered with a thick layer of lube, and the front sprocket area, where lots of the spray lube accumulates. I think part of the problem is that when the chain gets warm, the lube becomes too liquid and just flies everywhere, so much so that after a proper ride the lube will actually drip from the chain when I'm parked.

am I just applying too much lube, or what? Should I try a different brand?

I like the lubrification properties of my current stuff, as it keeps the chain shiny and clean, but the mess it makes is just intolerable really.

any suggestions appreciated

Sounds like you're applying way too much if it flings off in that amount and actually drips off the bike onto the ground.

Apply less, and lube the chain after you stop for the day and while the chain is still warm.
Wipe off any excess with a paper towel.

If you have gooey crap on rims and everywhere else you're surely doing something I'm not.

I'm with motokid. No issues either. My application method goes something like spray the whole chain real good and then take a rag and wipe off excess. Allow it to dry before riding.

I never spray before riding.

Only after a ride. On a "hot" chain.

Chain Wax on warm chain. Let it set up. Wipe side plates. If you get a Grease Ninja, you don't even have to wipe.

I've never seen presto chain lube but some chain lubes make a mess.

I doubt its how your puting the lube on the chain, try a different lube.

I use what ever chain lubes on sale, as long as it keeps my chain from getting rusty its doing its job imo.

I'm looking into some different lubes and found out about PROFI DRY LUBE. not sure if you guys know it. I think it's something similar to the chain wax motokid posted?

it's the so called "dry lubrication" that is teflon based. supposedly it works well but provides little protection against rust and doesn't work well in the rain. so not really ideal for a commuter  


any input on the matter guys? is your chain wax also teflon based dry lubrication?



I like my current lube as it has kept my chain perfectly for the last 20k km. I think maybe I should really first lube, and then wipe it lightly off with a towel. I usually just let the bike sit overnight without any wiping or removing excess lube. I shall try it out next time and report back.

I soak it good with wd-40 and clean it and the sprockets with a rag after every decent ride.

Well consider me a backwards Neanderthal... I use the heaviest weight gear oil I can find at the Autoparts store and put it on with one of those cheap little oil guns.

When I am on the road I use lithium spray grease that I pick up at the Autoparts store.

Usually lube at every fill up or every other fill up.

Yep it makes a mess but I just wipe it off.

Tried the dry lube route and some of the other high tech lubes but what I do now seems to provide the best bang for the buck. 25,000 miles on my last DL650 chain. Granted it doesn't see as much off road work on my WRR but it has seen plenty of gravel and FS roads.
