Rebuilding a parts bike WRR and running into an issue with fitting the stock muffler back onto the header. I cannot seem to get the bolt to reach the opposite side of the clamp. Bolt number 9 in this diagram. I recall it taking an excessive amount of time even with an extra pair of hands on the wife's WRX. Even went to the dealership and ordered a new bolt thinking the one I had was too short, but just ended up with 2 of the same.

I have to be doing something wrong, so please guide me with your experience in what seems like it should be an otherwise simple task.

Try pinching the clamp together with pliers before you thread the bolt in.
I'm assuming you are using the OEM gasket at this joint.

if a new bolt don't fit, inspect the threads in the clamp...i usually don't remove that bolt, maybe the removal dragged some stuff in...chase the threads in the clamp...

Thanks for the replies. The bolt threads in fine from the back, just seems about a 1/4" too short to reach even when using pliers to close the gap. I might try one of the other 3 stock exhaust i have to see if this one is the problem.

The stock muffler clamp usually doesn't need to have the bolt completely removed to slide it off the stock header. Could it be that it was expanded at one time to fit over an aftermarket header? That would be the most logical scenario.
