difficulties with 2nd gear

Help needed!
2008 wrr. Starts and runs well. When moving from first to second, the bike is keen to remain in neutral and requires a few tries to get it into second gear. Once there its fine and movement up and down through other gears is no problem.
any ideas?

Check first the clutch cable adjustment and the chain tension. Those are the two easy fixes...if they don't help, you have bigger problems :\

Make sure your shifter is tight.

1st to 2nd requires the longest shift, its the first one to act up when the shifters loose.

Well the problem - thank goodness - was as simple as the gear shifter lever being rotated too far up so that as one changed gear from 1st to second it got blocked by the after market front sprocket cover!
