| Seems like it would depend on whether the Cali guy had to get smog checked to register the bike. Without the Cali smog crap, it might not pass.
Just a thought. | |

Yes, it is. The emissions crap. I'm not familiar with Kalifornia's politically correct laws, but I suspect there may be difficulty with registering a relatively new/relatively low miles vehicle without all the Smog Shyte on it. | |

| Basically you are missing the charcoal canister (and related parts) on the front of the bike. All the stuff in red in this diagram, and one other hose that connects the canister to the throttle body. Unfortunately, the fuel tank and cap are also different for the Cali bikes. And you don't even want to know the price of the Cali fuel tank. It's like over $1,000!! The fuel tank on the Cali bikes has an extra fitting on the side to accept the hose from the canister, and the fuel cap is non-vented (unlike the 49 state cap which is vented). Also the Cali throttle body is different, but only because it has the extra fitting for the charcoal canister hose. This is all to prevent fuel from leaking out in the event of a tip over and to keep the fumes from escaping into the precious California atmosphere. So convert a 49 state bike to a "legal" Cali bike would cost you big bucks. | |

| I think you can still sell the bike in Cali, my uncle just bought a KTM out of Nevada and all DMV wanted to see was some sticker that was under the tank. So I know you can register bikes that were not originally from Cali in Cali. I'll find out from him what DMV wanted to see and get back to ya. | |

| Few random thoughts: (1) If you are selling it, it's not your problem. (2) If you want to be a nice guy about it -- the short answer is that a used vehicle without the CA emissions certification can not be registered in CA without at least 7500 miles on it. The 7500 miles has to be on the vehicle at the time of sale. The only exception might be if you are moving to CA with the new vehicle. (3) The emissions equipment is important but the only thing the DMV folks look at is the CA sticker and maybe the VIN number. You could add all the emissions stuff on it but without the right sticker or VIN, it won't matter. You can't expect DMV clerks to understand charcoal emissions canisters. (4) CA doesn't smog check, so it goes back to the VIN and stickers. | |
