KN-140 or KN-141 Empty
PostSubject: KN-140 or KN-141   KN-140 or KN-141 EmptyMon May 08, 2017 5:38 pm

I'm having a tough time finding out which is the equivalent oil filter for a 2017 WR250R. Doing my own search, I'm finding KN-140 to be the answer, but doing a search in this forum, people are saying that it's KN-141. Can anyone verify which is the correct one? I ordered a 5-pack off eBay for $30 of KN-140, but if I come to find out that I ordered wrong, then I'll just take the loss and get the correct ones. Thanks!

Both 140 and 141 fit. I have the genuine Yamaha oil filter, the KN-141, and the HiFlo HF-140, and they are all identical:

It also appears that HiFlo is making this particular filter for K&N.

Very good to be reassured...I ordered a 5-pack of the Hi Flo ones off eBay.

I'm super paranoid about this because when I first bought my TTR brand new, I went to do my first oil change after a few rides. I purchased an oil filter from the dealer who sold me the bike a few weeks beforehand. It fit perfectly. I didn't think anything of it.

The next day I was in the woods and my whole motor seized up on me. I had to push it about 1.5 miles through the woods. It sucked.

It turns out that they sold me the wrong oil filter. The number was just a little bit off, but they gave me the wrong one nonetheless.

Whether it was covered was debatable too since I had already done work to the bike ( new exhaust, carb rejet, sprocket change...not to mention there was a factory recall for my bike regarding the countershaft seal popping out due to the lack of pressure release. I got the letter in the mail about 6 months later regarding the recall, but I had already figured out what the issue was from some help from thumpertalk. But the fact that I had to fix this problem also led to them questioning who was at fault. It was a mess, but in the end it was still covered under warranty.

Still scares the poop out of me though every time I change my oil filter now.

I cannot see how an improper oil filter would be the reason for the engine seizing up. There are dirt bikes that do not even use oil filters, and they are obviously working without problems. Especially for a low-spec engine like the one in the TTR, the dealer's explanation  simply sounds absurd.

I dunno. They said that the oil filter that I installed wasn't going over this little 'nipple', and therefore wasn't allowing oil to get to the top end. I have no clue. It was nightmare...it was 2 years ago though, and they covered it free of charge.

All I know is that I'm extra careful now though especially when it comes to checking part numbers and making sure anything that has to do with oil is 100% on point. I guess that's not a bad thing.

OK so I have been looking into the discrepancy between the K&N filter numbers. From what I can tell KN-141 was designed after Yamaha part number 5TA-13440-00 which is the original oil filter for the 2008 WR250R/X. The KN-140 is designed after the 5D3-13440-00 which is what was used in the 2009+ WR250R/X.
So I guess K&N and HI Flow just redesigned their part for the new filter specifications which may be slightly different.

I do have one question however, do the new oil filter part numbers supersede the old numbers so that if you get an oil filter for a 2008 bike will it be the same oil filter ordered for a 2009+ bike?

5D3-13440-09 is the number I got from my dealer. They are available everywhere online for under $10 individually and in 4-packs for about $36 which works out to $9 each. And my dealer sells them for $11 if I'm in a hurry and need it right now.

I see no reason to take a chance on anything else...

Edit: just found them on this site for $7.91 and this page says that 5D3-13440-09 supersedes 5D3-13440-00:

I got a four pack of HF 140 HiFloFiltro from Amazon. They are the correct filter for our WR250R's.

I just need to get some replacement o-rings for the oil filter cover and o-rings for the oil drain bolt. I might even get a magnetic oil drain bolt.
