About me...

I picked up a little Honda CRF80 for my son about two months ago; he's been asking for a dirt bike for the past two years and my boss's son was selling his the same week of his birthday and he offered me a decent price so I got it for him. My boy is only 6 so the CRF80 is way too big for him right now, so I've been riding him around on it. He's convinced that if I hold it upright for him and let him get started he can drive it, I asked him how he planned to stop and he pondered it for a minute.. and said "I'll just jump off like I do on the big bicycles!" I said "Negative bud, can't let you do that".. Anyhow, I've had so much fun on that little thing that I decided I wanted one for myself!

I got my learners permit and purchased my '08 WR250R yesterday (Tuesday the 18th) and I've spent the past two days putting around the yard on it, I'm like a little kid with a new toy! It's a bit bigger than the CRF80 I've learned to ride on the last couple of months, but I think I'll manage. I have to admit though that I had spent quite a bit of time reading reviews and comparing prices on DS Bikes recently and I was pretty set on the KLX250S before I saw the WR250R in the showroom last week for only $4900. Thankfully I found this forum later that night and spent the next week pouring through your experiences, advice, and pictures. You guys (and gals!) have some great threads on here! You guys saved me from being one of those guys with a KLX who wishes he had gotten a WR.

I grew up about an hour outside Wash DC and am currently living in Warrenton for those of you who are familiar with the area. I work in IT by day and spend my nights and weekends volunteering as a Firefighter, EMT, and Search and Rescue Team Member. I hope to make some friends and get some experience riding so I can hit the trails this summer!

Welcome ! Great story ! Agree... Great folks in here. Congrats on the new bike !

You're not jumping off the WR when you want to come to a stop are you ? ViROID - Wash DC Area 93746

That 80 is a lot of bike for a 6 Y.O. Tell him to practice bringing his bicycle to a stop and balancing without putting his feet down (good practice for anyone IMO). Take him on the front of your bike and teach him how to use the controls. They grow like weeds. He'll be riding with you in no time.

Safety first... No gear. No ride. No exceptions.

Absolutely; I'd like to get out towards Edinburg Gap, there are some ATV/Jeep trails out there that are supposed to be pretty nice.

No, I'm not. :)

He's got some growing to do, I've tried to let him run the controls but he keeps gag'n the throttle and refuses to be gentle with it so I stopped letting him drive. The 9yr old has been running around on it though which is good.
