Time to change coolant...... Empty
PostSubject: Time to change coolant......   Time to change coolant...... EmptySat May 29, 2010 12:24 am

Besides puttering with the my 2008 WRR and tweaking it, it is time to change the oil & filter again plus flush the coolant system for the first time. I am searching for tips on the coolant products that are on the shelfs. Does it make much of a difference which coolant is used over another? My WR is used 75% off pavement, forsest service roads and occassional single track, leaving the other 25% for commuting around the streets.

Thanks for your input

The manual simple states to use one which offers protection for aluminum engines. If changed yearly probably OK to use most brands.

after running a couple types in KTM's and measuring coolant temps going into the rad and exiting the rad, Motul motocool seemed to work the best, compared with green stuff, blue stuff, engine ice (racing stuff)..........that's my 2 cents.....
The motul was exiting the rad a fewer degrees cooler than the others which means it dissipates the heat better.....

I'm looking to change my coolant too and have a jug of EngineIce waiting. A friend runs it in his sport bikes & 4wheeler and swears by this stuff. Personally, i dont like paying for anything that's "Pre-Mixed" because you're basically buying 50% coolant and 50% de-ionized water ($.99 gal). Regardless, I'm looking to change the fluid to help with St Louis' 90deg+ summer days.

Does anyone have tips or guides to changing the radiator fluid?

I've used Motul's premix plus some redline water wetter for my last two changes. Even with the regular Yamaha coolant I never had overheating issues. Nothing cools better than straight water+water wetter in hot temperatures. Engine ice is just fancy packaged pre-diluted blue colored pet safe antifreeze.

The bottom bolt on the water pump housing is a drain bolt if I remember correctly. Take off the radiator cap, pull that bolt, and let the coolant drain out. Refill with new coolant. Run it to get any air out of the system, let it cool and top off as needed.

Thanks Skierd. And again, I've never tried EngineIce before but my buddy swears by it so I figured I'd give it a shot.

So I changed the radiator fluid with EngineIce yesterday and did notice some difference on my morning ride into work (3.4 Miles). Skierd, you were right about the bottom bolt of the waterpump being a drain. The whole process was actually much easier then I had expected.

1. Let engine cool (probably the hardest part)
2. Removed Skid Plate (easier for draining)
3. Put bike on centerstand,
4. Removed screw in side of radiator cap,
5. Removed 2 bolts holding on plastic covering the overflow tank,
6. Removed water pump bottom bolt
7. Removed Radiator Cap
8. Removed Overflow tank
9. Rock Bike side-to-side a couple times instead of waiting for coolant to finish draining,
10. Put it all back together and fill radiator and overflow
11. Enjoy cooler engine
