I ordered a skid plate from the dealer before i even picked up the bike. Still waiting on that one. Now, I ordered a 12 tooth sprocket for it.

You guessed it............. backorder! Backorder, Backorder, Backorder 911463
I think i could probably machine this crap faster myself.

Anybody else have this problem?

If you don't mind switching brands, ask them to try a different brand.
They may even be able to get the same exact product from a different supplier.
In other words, there are several places a dealer can order a Sunstar, Renthal, or JT sprocket from.

Any dealer will run into backorders.
Some suppliers and/or brand names are well known for it. :)

I ordered a skid plate from my dealer on Wednesday and I got it yesterday, my guess is it is probably a different brand though. I've had troubles with back orders for parts from Yamaha though, when my motor was being rebuilt it took about a week and half to get one of the bearings. and when I broke my starter button it took almost 2 weeks to get a replacement from yamaha which did really piss me off.

To suport my community I always check with my dealer or local retailor first.

If they don't bother to have what I need in stock, I can order myself. Most of the time it's cheaper to. I think that stocking parts is a mark of good service. It might cost more but it's there when needed. The dealers don't realize that they are forcing customers to plan when to buy. Since they have to plan, they do it all the way and order themselves and save money.

I'm with DanCamp. If my local supplier doesn't have what I want in stock, I'm buying it off the internet. Ordering something from a dealer will take 7-10 days at best. I can usually get it a little cheaper online and most things show up on my doorstep in about 3 days.

I just ordered a GTYR tail rack and rear disk guard from a dealer. Those parts are both backordered, supposedly till the end of June (2010). I half expected they would be when I ordered them but that's what I want so I just accept it and be happily surprised someday when they get here. It seems that Yamaha, and they're probably not alone, is adopting a just-in-time manufacturing philosophy. More like, after you buy it, they'll make it. From a profit perspective, that's reasonably sound. They're a manufacturer, not a convenience store.

Stateside the players have been Flatland Racing and Ricochet. Wolfie loves her Australian skidplate, and we have a new player making a skidplate that carries your tools, a road atlas, and a spare knobbie.

Here's my review of the Flatland: http://www.wrrdualsport.com/reviews-intro/bikeparts/107-flrskid
