I'd like to get a WRR but it's a bit tall for me. Friend suggested I have it lowered 1.5". Other than the loss of ground clearance, are there any performance or mechanical disadvantages to doing this?

Hell no. I've got mine lowered 6 inches. I am really short and found that lowering it made things MUCH easier. It can be done, with some work, but IMO, it was worth it. Lowering a WRR 61865

Also check Revol Suspension in Enumclaw, WA (they can sell parts online too if you're not in the area). I bought my bike off craigslist a few months ago and it had the Revol 1.5" lowering link (not a Yamalink, it's actually a different part than the one Yamalink replaces). It also had the 'factory' lowering done. I'm 5'10" with a 32" inseam, so I may not have technically needed the bike lowered, but it sure did feel better.

I haven't had any issues with the bike being lowered. Feels right for me.
