Hi I just bought a 08 wr250r, and I am VERY impressed with this bike. It is a definite step up from what I had before; I put 8,000 miles of trails on my 04 TW200. I loved my TW, but I was overriding it, and I wanted to get out of it before I tore it up so bad it wasn't worth anything. A couple of week ago I set out looking at who makes a decent dirt oriented dual sport, and well Yamaha won out again. I went looking for a 200-300cc Dual sport that would be more dirt bike than street bike. I have to admit there was much larger selection of small displacement bikes available in '11 than there was in '04. In '04 there was the TW and everyone else made big ole 650+cc dual sports. I went looking and I found out quite a few bikes fit my requirements, but I have to say the WRR stands out from the pack. You couldn't give me a Honda, feels like they are technologically stuck in the 80's, the small Suzuki was dismal, kinda like the TW. Kawasaki's offering was good, but I trust Yamaha from past experiences.
I rode down to my local dealer a week ago to look at a '01 wr426, but ended up wheeling and dealing over one of two '08 WRR's. One was brand new, $5300, and one was used with 3k on it, a FMF pipe, skid plate, and fender bag for $4300. After talking it out, I brought my TW, back the next week and traded it in on the brand new 08 WRR. I got 1400 trade in for my TW. I was well satisfied with what I got for the TW. I opted for the new WRR because it has a year warranty, I know no one has abused it, and who cares if there is a aftermarket pipe.
So what is my impression of the WRR. OMG! IT IS AMAZING!!
I put 150 miles on it since yesterday, and took it offroad for the first time this morning. Took it to a local jeep trail, just a short 13 miles running between the national forest access road and the parkway. It did well, the suspension was amazing, I was able to ride over stuff alot easier than my dad behind me, on his 97 TW. My only complaint was no skid pan and first gear is geared too high.
Well that's about it for now, I love my WRR and will be using this forum regularly, thanks.
