Hi. Just picked up a brand new 2010 WR250X. I'm from Saskatchewan Canada. Not too many WR's around these parts. This is my first bike, I had a Honda Ruckus before this and rode that for the past few years. Was looking for something with a little more jam but just as economical. Slowly figuring out this gear shifting business but the snow coming today might slow down my progress lol.

Couple questions...

- First gear...Pretty much shifting out of it as soon as your moving? I havent really jammed on it in first since Im learning.. just curious since there is no tach.
- I see some guys put handguards and axle sliders on... these save significant damage to the bike if you lay it down? If it goes down with these on what will still get damaged?

Thanks!

The wr250r/x has a rev limiter. It won't let you over-rev the bike.

First gear is good for about 15 mph (you do the correction for kph) I think.

Wind it out and when you feel the bike have a massive hic-cup you've found the rev limiter.

As for crash protection....a lot depends on the crash. I low-sided in a parking lot and the only thing scratched was barkbuster on handlebar and footpeg.

If the crash involves more violent actions by the bike - all the crash protection you can buy for it won't save it from a lot of damage.

Bent handlebars are quick to happen. Scoffed or broken plastic, bent sub-frame, broken lights, twisted or bent forks.....it all depends on the situation of the crash.

Keep the rubber side down....... thumb

Welcome from Ontario. Nice WR thumb

As for shifting, just play it by ear. You don't need a tach. Just shift up when it sounds right to do so. The bike is pretty forgiving. I had to get used to six gears though, I sometimes loose count and have an extra gear to go. All fun.
The might be a few more days of riding before it gets too cold. I use my sled gear and all is good until the snow falls. Then I just switch machines.
My bike came with axle sliders but I don't realy see the point. When (or if) you drop it, you will have some damage anyway. Sliders are probably not going to help much.
