Stiff throttle Empty
PostSubject: Stiff throttle   Stiff throttle EmptyThu Sep 06, 2012 3:59 pm

My used WR250R seems to have a stiff throttle. Not sticky but stiff as if the return spring was too strong.

The previous owner must have buried it in mud - the throttle tube and cam was packed but I managed to disassemble and clean, so it turns freely.

The main problem is my wrist gets tired from holding the throttle open.

Anybody had this problem or ideas???

Jeez.....I never seem to be able to twist my throttle far enough..... hide

Never had the issue you describe.

Sounds like a return spring on your throttle cables is too stiff.

Not sure if there's an adjustment on return springs for throttle.

Trace cables down under the gas tank and see if there's something inhibiting the cables?
A pinched cable? Caught between something it shouldn't be?

Issue seems common enough that people came up with items like the Crampbuster & Throttlemeister.

I actually have a crampbuster but don't like to use it in the dirt...

You can get a semi good look at the throttle body/return spring with a flashlight from the side of the bike with the gear shift. Removing the gas tank will get you a good look at the cables and the outside of the throttle body. Going into the less likely, something inside the throttle body - easiest way to get a look would be to remove the air filter and use a mirrior and flashlight.

Are you standing a lot? Perhaps puttting a lot of weight/stress on your hands. Do you find that you use a death grip on the throttle? Using light/loose hands can make quite a difference. One way to keep weight off of your hands is to lean forward before/when accelerating and lean back when slowing down. Basically, use the handlebars only for steering input as much as possible. If you wrap your fingers completely around the throttle, an alternative if your hands are large enough is to put the pads of your fingers on the bottom of the grip and somewhere on your palms on the top. Leaving a large part of your figers out in front of the grip. Another thought is that you may just need to adjust the position of your hand on the trottle (up/forward, back/down). And of course, take it easy if you're trying any of these out for the first time and until you're comfortable with them.
