| Just trying to get an off topic goin...
I have trained in CF combat, Judo, Jeet Kune Do, Jiu Jitsus'...including brazillian...and a few others, including MMA. Started exploring seriously about 18 yrs ago.
I have also participated in a few seminars involving combat and sport...
I would love to hear from anyone else practicing or considering starting training...
I would consider myself more sport experienced...but true combat has been what its all about.
I also consider my trail riding, a cross training for my combat sports...mountain biking being my first foray, now trailing on my wrr...next Seems like trials riding...but yet to be explored seriously.
Any combat sport enthusiats or inquiring minds out there?

| I've been studying Hung Gar Kung-Fu for about 6 years now and most recently started adding some Wing Chun as well. I teach kids the Kung-Fu twice a week too. I tried some BJJ once but it was not something I cared for. I like the traditional stuff better and it's more suited for my age. _________________ 2008 WR250X Gearing: 13t - 48t Power Commander 5 / PC-V Airbox Door Removed - Flapper glued - AIS removed FmF Q4 Bridgestone Battlax BT-003rs

| I have had two back surgeries so I am very limited to what I can do anymore. I used to be into power lifting and lifted sometimes with a dude that was into MMA. He trained way more intense than I expected. I thought wrestlers when I was in high school were crazy about diet. This dude would go into a serious cutting phase to get down into a lower weight class.
You guys have my respect. My mom would never let me learn martial arts as kid, she thought it was too dangerous. Yet she let me ride dirt bikes, race BMX, and play football, haha.

| i did 10years of ju jitsu when i was younger, but moved and had no club so had to give it up. have also done bits and pieces of muay thai, kick boxing, boxing, judo, what ever i could get to. have now been back at it for just over 6 months with a local based MMA styled karate (much more self defence and realistic use rather than all just kata and "silly looking" power stances). the sensai i train with is also very big with mma and experimentation. there is a group of us that start 1.5hrs before normal training and i go through ju jitsu stuff i know (i have a lot of gracie dvd's too we work off). he has just cross graded with a kempo kai dojo 4hrs away that also does close quarters combat. they have a family link to the gracie's and regularly get royce to put on seminars. we are starting to incorp some kali/eskrima after a recent seminar.
i love it for the sport and fitness. in the 6months i've been back i've dropped nearly 30kg and gone from 40" pants to 34". its improved my riding hugely and i'm enjoying things more with much more energy. Plus it puts my mind at rest knowing i can defend my family if need be.
Coop, find some local clubs and give it a go, talk to instructors and get a feel for them, not every style will suit everyone. your never to old to try and MOST will help and work with you regarding any injuries you may have.

| I have taken shaolin kung fu... I did learn a few useful things in my short years.
I was introduced to win chun thru JKD...and definitely found use of sticky hands...especially when ground fighting. I also found push hands to be an interresting sport/topic, as well...much like high level judo.
The only limiting thing I didnt catch about win chun was the foot work...a boxing or tkd class would serve win chun , and me as well. Especially in competition.
Regarding injuries, my back always bothers me when I dont train regular...a good club...and a good coach will help you deal with your limitations, much better than you could on your own.
Do yourself the favor and find a good coach...
...I'm a little old school i guess, but Royce is the man...if you could ever train with a Gracie do it. Not to mention the phillipino MA...I love a good stick/knife night...let's you know just how lively your footwork and strategy is working... :)

| I am by no measure an expert in Judo or BJJ. But if you find these things difficult and/or awkward, I may be able to help... | |

Tactically, very bad move/idea. Nice display of purpose and intent, however. Hell yes the use of firearms is a martial art.

Not sure that counts. Unless, your training lead to that end...you want a better coach... Though knowing how to control a weapon is what the art"s are about.. Having a weapon, without some guidence/training...well, that's up to you. I will promise you, that a good coach, in any interest...will improve your goal, much more efficient than you can do on your own. Not to tell you how to run things, but a competent security system can do wonders.... I have an experience in that, so i may be bias... Not to disrespect your actions...but they didnt sound artistic...rather, opportunistic. If you had more to add, i'ld love to hear. Stay safe.

I've trained with a few tkd guys...and man, can they kick.
Do you compete/train in ITF or WTF rules?
I wish I could do what they do...but I do what I do. Which is avoid them...lol
And...what is BHP?

Having a weapon, without some guidence/training...well, that's up to you. And yet, the reality is there are somewhere around three million defensive uses of firearms in the US every year. The overwhelming majority of those prospective victims have no training and coaching whatsoever. The overwhelming majority also use some weapon or other that the purists buying Ed Brown pistols, Fusion pistols, etc would sneer at and call "Saturday Night Specials" or unsuitable for the intended purpose. And yet, with rare exceptions, they carry the day. Resolve goes a lot further than coaching does, and very few predatory criminals have either had coaching - or experience with running into somebody willing to dial 1911 instead of 911. I'm all in favour of training - in fact, at various times my job has been to provide that training. But I don't delude myself that people that don't receive that training are bound to fail.

| I guess you guys are suggesting I could have been disarmed and had my weapon used against me? It's a fair point and one my buddies immediately pointed out to me. But it sure felt good terrifying the life out of this trespasser and plotting thief. | |

That and I also have an old buddy who confronted his old adversary with a rolling pin. I'm sure it felt good at the moment. His sentence was 15yrs. I'm not suggesting that without coaching, everyone would be useless. A bad coach could be the worst thing. Just that anything worth doing, is worth doing well. A good coach will likely point out details that you have been missing.

Yeah, it's a possibility, and that's why a firearm is a distance weapon - so you don't have to do hand to hand monkeyshines. However, bad tactical decisions are often corrected by a look of resolve with them. They might think of trying to grab the gun at their head if you look terrified or uncertain - but if they think what they see in your eyes is somebody just begging for an excuse to pull the trigger, most will just be thinking about the fact they're pissing their pants. Anger over being victimized often generates that look that they see... You can be trained to disarm somebody with a weapon too close to you easily enough. Happily, very few bad guys live a life that leads them where they would get that kind of training. Little old ladies, cranky old guys in wheelchairs, and scared single moms have been successfully defending themselves with guns from bad guys for a long time now, and very few of them ever had a single lesson in using a firearm or tactical application of same. Some basic training in martial use and practice once in a while sure doesn't hurt, however.
