I think the biggest difference for wieght is in the frames. I sat on the KTM at the dealer and it does feel much lighter (and also quite a bit taller). The funny thing is they have EXACTLY the same switchgear on the handlebars. KTM uses these fancy chromoly tubes for the frame and Yamaha has this gigantic aluminum thing. 50 pounds is a huge difference, but that also comes from using super light materials that cost a lot of money. A new brake lever for the KTM (made by Brembo out of some kind of super light alloy) costs $49, the one for the Yamaha costs $16 and is made of a type of mild steel (good for flexibilty but heavier), and that's just one part...

I hear the WR's don't feel to heavy when riding them which is good and if you add a lowering link they handle better. And like you said, the service intervals is unbeatable, by far with our KTM's. And that's the one of the biggest reason's we want one. (Plus it's EFI) So it can be a bike that can just be used whenever by whomever without worrying about to much service since we won't be using it much. As long as they go decently keep up and go anywhere, including dunes with a paddle tire, I think it's a awesome choice. That's why were so interested in test riding one.

I don't know about dunes, even with a paddle, I just don't think it has the power, even with it's 10,000 RPM redline.

And to ride it off road really requires better tires and a bigger rear sprocket, otherwise it's geared too tall (more for street from the factory). I lowered mine an inch as well to put both my feet on the ground.

I've read threads of guys who change the gearing since it's tall, put paddle tires on, and take them to glamis. They said more power would have been better but they handled it none the less. Other people said they have done it multiple times as well. Come on girls, take those bad boys to the dunes and enjoy them. wink

I've tried, it was an epic fail. That's what I have a Rhino for... :)
