Is my wr ok?? Empty
PostSubject: Is my wr ok??   Is my wr ok?? EmptyThu Oct 03, 2013 7:58 pm

Long time lurker but first post so hello!

Just picked up my nice new wr and so far couldn't be happier. Still breaking it in but definetly started 'playing' with the ideas of what's to come. So onto it...

Obviously no mods yet, so bone stock.

My new baby seems to have a hard time turning over.. Sometimes 6-8 cranks before it fires up... When it is up, I can't describe the idle as rough, but maybe not right??

Exhaust sounds fine. Nice thumps so to speak. Engine 'sounds' seem to be more up and down kind of like it's working hard to maintain idle...

Got her 'naked' for the fun of it and onto the stand, and noticed the flapper on the air box is ALWAYS down.. Idle.. Through the gears... Always down.. As in open.. Seemed weird. Shouldn't it always be up? Except under hard accel?

Please call me crazy and worried for nothing??

600 miles in.. Always at a different rpm.. And for the fun of it, 2 oil changes already.

Welcome to the forum.
The idle on these bikes are not smooth when cold, though it should get better when warmed up. You can mess with the "CO" setting which supposedly richens/leans idle and just off idle, though I didn't notice a change on my bike. There is a youtube video out there showing you how, but I wouldn't worry to much as long as its pretty smooth once warm.

Some times my bike fires right up first second revolution, other times it takes a little longer then it probably should maybe 4 revolutions. 6-8 seems excessive. Assuming you have a fully charged battery I would think that something may very well be wrong. Possibly the co setting may help here as well since these bikes run a little lean when cold.
Make sure you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to the on position, if it doesn't then that will cause a long crank.

As to the flapper, well I don't know what it is supposed to do. Most people seem to think it is emissions or noise related, but I am skeptical about those opinions. I haven't driven around with the seat off to watch the flapper, but if it is closed engine off, and open engine on then it is fully functional. As in the computer is commanding it and it is functioning properly. If it never moves ever, then yeah there could be a problem.

Is it closed when the engine is off? And open when the engine is on?

The reply is much appreciated!

The 6-8 turn starting doesn't happen every time.. Like you said, most of the time, starts right up no problem. Seemed excessive to me too for sure.

Air box flapper stays open even when off. Read through most of the adv 'mega thread' and most all of this forum too just to learn as much as possible.

Read a lot about most of us 'gluing down' the flapper which started my little investigation.

But to completely clarify, open when off, in idle, in gear on the stand, even when given a handful of throttle.

I'm at the point where I'm definitely thinking something's up, but really hoping for an easy fix. I'd hate to take it back to the dealer. Picked up the bike missing screws in the plastics, no gas, low tire pressure.. NOT a good dealer for sure...

If the bike is brand new, take it back to dealer and ask them to check things out.

I have NEVER had to "crank" my 2008 to get her started and I have original 2008 fuel pump and original battery too. wink

I would not worry about the flapper shit. You'll be ripping that nonsense out soon enough.

Open is better than closed.

As mentioned, some say it's a noise reduction device more than anything else. Operates at higher throttle positions to reduce noise. So not closing when bike is off and not closing when at idles isn't an issue.

The vast majority of us have ripped it out, screwed it down, or glued it down.

The rough starting is something I'd have looked at by dealer if I was under warranty and had a brand new bike.

Thanks guys

Wanted to give an update like I said if only for the knowledge base of this great forum..

Unfortunately, not too much to report. Yamaha had my prize for 2 days and the report only said 'general diag and repair' wouldn't tell me what they did or why it ran the way it did.......

Another reason why my local dealer isn't the best.. Really wanted to support the local guys too. They're making it really hard to do so...

Great news is she runs amazingly better now. One crank and it's fired up, and even when cold, she runs very well.

Can't wait to take the knowledge I've learned from you guys and make it run even better by removing the fluff installed by yamaha.. (Flapper, ais, exhaust.. Etc..)

Thanks again guys. Didn't want my first post to be "hey! I have a problem"... But such is life..

Positive things to come I promise!
