Have read post after post on many sites and did gearing commander to see how I wanted to gear my WR. Think I’m down to 13 front and either 45 or 46. My reasoning for this is that I plan on a lot of highway, old state asphalt and dirt roads. Trying to also maintain some better response for off road, but I feel I would be asking a lot of the bike if I geared the rear any lower on the long Wyoming highway miles. People seem to go to 47-49 and I feel that this is more off-road oriented than my goals are. I am still running stock tires and no mods. Rear suspension is lowered all the way with the forks to match. Won’t have a lot of extra weight on it, though I will have a larger fuel tank and some extra fuel a board. What do folks think that are running 45 46 and doing similar riding? I need to finally pull the trigger sometime soon.

steel sprockets are inexpensive, if your stock chain doesn't have many miles just get a 44 its probably the best and use the same chain till it wears out

I use 14/48 for dualsport, thats super close to 13/45. Bike has opened intake and different exhaustsystem.

Have a look at www.gearingcommander.com to see how the different sprockets affects the speed.
As I recall, a tooth more at the back only "costs" you 2km/h (under 1,5mph) at the same rpm.

Jens Eskildsen, any particular reason why you run 14 up front? Thought I had read that you had to run a special case guard for that. Anyone running 13/45-46 doing long highway runs?

Slightly better chain and chainslider life, so if youre buying new I'd highly recommend that.
I use a sandman cover and have some very slight marks on it, not an issue.

2 years ago I rode 350km (220 miles) interstate at 110km/h (70mph) with 14/49. I think I was riding at around 8000rpm. I'd go lower gearing if I could.
I have the option to go 14/46 (same as stock) and change the front sprocket to a 13 when I get to the fun stuff, which would give me close to my current 14/48 gearing.

A steel sprocket is like 20$ (front is cheaper) and you can donate it to a fellow rider if you feel the need to change it out. Theres bigger difference on the tire circumference than 1 tooth on the rear.
