Why? Look at the cable ends, and possible lube the cable.
I've ridden over 100.000km on a cable on my xt600.

Another cable is cheap, so if it makes you sleep at night, go change it.

For $28 I think I will next time I have my tank off, just for preventative maintenance

I've only changed cables on bikes made in Europe dunno
