Spokes Empty
PostSubject: Spokes   Spokes EmptyTue Aug 03, 2010 1:09 pm

copied from my post on SMJ

Quote :
so after i got the new tires mounted the other day, i went to do a quick spoke check to make sure everything was still tight.

little bit of pressure on each one working my way around the wheel,
till one of them made a small "pop" sound, now there's no more tension
on it and it spins pretty freely.

what did i do?

so sounds like it's stripped.

here are my questions,

-where should i look for a new spoke(s)?

-can i get away with replacing just the one?

-will it be a simple pull the old one out, put the new one in, or will i find myself knee deep in wheel truing?

this is for an X model btw.

thanks

I would get a spoke and nipple from the dealer.
Yes you can just replace the broken one.
You will need to take the tire and tube off.
Your wheel should still be trued.
Just tighten it up until it makes the same noise as the other spokes when you thump them with your fingernail.

There is a prescribed spoke tightening patter that is not just "going around the wheel". Like the lugs on an automobile wheel, use a cross-hatch pattern. If you really want to do a quality job, you can buy a spoke torque wrench and set to factory specs, which is only a few pounds. Truing a wheel requires a jig.
